    groper creek

    hi all,
took the family down to groper creek over the long weekend & this time we were able to do some crabbing & fishing as there was no rain!

arrived on friday morning set up the camp site, rigged the lines packed the boat with the kids & away we went.
headed straight to the mouth & baited the pots. once we had the pots in we are off to catch some bait, with plenty of mullet, herring, prawn it was fishing time.
found a nice little drop off with a bit of rubble at the bottom this will do nicely.
didn"t take long before i was on & a good fight started only to bring a hefty catfish to the side of the boat, over the next few hours it was non stop catching fish.
jade was next with a 1kg silver bream, luke"s turn & another big cattie. jolene"s (mum) rod bent over with a good hit & she bought a nice cod to the boat this is her first fish ever!
little justin was getting a little s$%^y cause nothing was taking his bait than his rod bent over & he was into a top fish, after a little bit of help from me he had a 3kg queenie in the net, big effort from a 2yr old.
time was getting on around 5pm, so we pulled lines in & went to check the pots out of 6 pots we had 4 nice full muddies.
saturday morning i was up early so i went for a walk with castnet in hand down to the boat ramp, it only took 1 cast & i filled up with good fillet size mullet. again loaded the kids in & back out to check the pots, only 2 this time & they were in all night. didn"t do much fishing on saturday didn"t want to get caught not being able to get back over the sandbar.
saturday night saw us eating a few muddies for tea as did sunday night & monday night.
sunday back out again not much happen on the fishing part so i went for a cast off the jetty to catch some prawns, first cast got about 2kg of prawns 2nd cast i lost my draw string net to something big beside the jetty (snag). justin also got a grunter.

had a good chat with scott & ozbee also, & thanks ozbee for lending us the egg flip.
monday mornig took off early to get the pots (another 4) with 1 being 19cm across & barnicles all over him + heavy .
time to pack up the tent & all, total of crabs we got 10 & not 1 was even half empty.

Once again you've done a top effort Ron. Good to see someone fishing....

Better watch out the young fella's getting some experience, he might just start to beat his old man....

    kev,
the land based fishing is good mate, there is a jetty + a boat ramp each side of it.
there is open banks each side of it also, just throw your pots off the banks if you want to. it"s only $10 for each adult & $5 for each kid (kids under 5 dont pay) per night if you are going to camp.
bbq"s & hot showers also. we didn't get the $10 deposit back for the shower key cause jade lost the key.

I am coming up to cairns in 2 weeks so i hope the estuary's and offshore are going off cause our brisbane bay has fish but not your species they all go off. Cheers good trip by the sounds of it. Cheers northerners.

    Ron,

good see you had a good fishing trip with the family. It does make it easier when they are catching fish, I know it keeps my kids happy and want to stay out there or come out fishing again.
Also good to see that the muddies are still around.
May have to consider planning a trip down there myself.

    Jeff
