    Re: cairns meeting re closure

Hi Dean, I spoke to one of the attendees today and could not believe what is being proposed.

I wish everyone that is involved in this battle strength and resolve.

Surely this absurd proposal cannot come to fruition.

    Best of luck.

    Pete.

I was there also and was a great turn out. I love seeing Bob Katter going off and was pleasing to see the support to an absolutly crazy proposal.......PEW Stinks of Hypocracy considering most of it's funds are provided by a major Oil Company, Sun Oil...............

Could we have any of the finer details on exactly what they proposed at the public forum and some of the responses?

    Cheers

    Re: cairns meeting re closure

Ok, I didn't attend the meeting, but have been reading up on it all over the place.

This meeting was NOT initiated by the Govt, though they like the fact that we think they did all the work. Rather, it was a Cairns based Game fishing club who did all the leg work, organising speakers from all stakeholders, including GBRMPA (though they are adamant it has nothing to do with them and they want to be left out), some Govt reps, tourism reps, rec, commercial and charter fishing industry representatives etc.

From what I have read, a well constructed, politically correct campaign is in the works with recfish and several industry representatives from all fishing sectors, by politically correct, they mean something that is not going to say that were downright against any and all forms of conservation.

There's more to it, but I am currently waiting for the minutes of the meeting to be emailed to me. however all industry groups are encouraging everyone to write or email their local members at STATE and FEDERAL levels, preferably sending an email to your federal member and Cc: your local state member to create uniformity so both members are aware of each individual's stance on this pathetic act.

For a bit of background info, PEW is a private Not For Profit US Based organisation, started and funded by Sun Oils, a major crude oil producer in the US (talk about hypocritical yeah?), obviously PEW do not want to bite the hand that feeds them, so they are focusing their radical conservation antics on other parts of the world.

I have read several replies to emails from other people's local members that has been posted on several other forums, and so far, the consensus is swinging our way, with the best quote by far coming from Bob Katter (Federal: Kennedy electorate) the PEW should 'piss off and look after their own backyard' ( don't know if the 'piss off' bit was in the actual email, or if the person who posted it altered it before posting).

So far all of the replies from federal and state members I have read have been positive for us ( I am still waiting for mine) going on to say that PEW's proposal is ridiculous and will not make it as law.

So thats the positive side of things.

    Now for the negatives, unfortunately.

Replies from local members even though positive for us, when asked why the Govt, specifically, Garret does not issue a statement confirming their position against the proposal, they fall silent with no answer.

AS is the same when emails have been sent to the Minister himself, no answer.

This of course is seen as shifty as, so all the involved parties are still continuing with their plan of attack.

One of the biggest concerns though, is how the proposal is worded. PEW use our own legislation and international agreement against us by saying the Australian Government is obligated to do so to comply with this agreement, and this legislation........you get the picture, this is the major reason why people are thinking the Govt is so tight lipped about anything and will not dismiss the proposal completely.

So from what I have read, these were the 2 stand out negative points people are most worried about.

The industry Representatives on our side have been planning and implementing steps for the last 2 years to combat this proposal, and they have ample material to see it through, but they need your help.

What they are looking for first and foremost is for as many people as possible to email their local, state and federal members and to encourage other to do the same. This is something everyone can get involved in no matter what part of the state or country you live in, why? Simple, this will be a federal closure and affects everybody. So if you are in WA, help your fellow Fisho's out, we simply don't know what is on the agenda next for these groups, even Rowley Shoals can be the next target. SEQ, you have suffered first hand on what closures can do so you know how we feel, we've been through it once, lets not put QLD through that again. Same goes for every other state, your beloved fishery could be next on their hitlist, your support now will mean even more support when it comes time to defend your fishery.

Remember not to be downright against conservation, we've all tried that route beofre (GBR Zoning and MBMP zoning come to mind) and it does not work. Simply say you are totally opposed to this proposal and give an explanation why, in which PEW have already done that part for us ie, they admit in their proposal that virtualy no footprint is left on current fishing activity in the coral sea. Play on the 'global financial crisis' mention job losses, not only in fishing, but tourism, hospitality, accommodation, trades people (such as mechanics, boatbuilders, construction) etc. there are many small townships that rely on tourist number every year that specifically visit to go fishing in the coral sea, many of which are cashed up and willing to pay top dollar for everything. For intance, the Giant Black Marlin season brings literally millions and millions of dollars every year from international visitors paying for a charter, accommodation, tackle, hospitality industires the list is endless

On top of emails, they would (sorry I keep saying 'they', I just can't remember the name of the organisers) like to have similar meeting held all the way down the Coast where these closures will affect. They have the material, they just need the means to spread the word. If you can help in anyway shape or form, put your hand up please, get into contact with your local tackle stores fishing clubs etc to see what they know about it and how you can help.

As I said, I am still waiting for the minutes of the meeting so should have more details soon, as well as some contact details so everyone can get involved.
