Mine was about 8%
As I have my boat for sale I am looking at options other than ausfish and boatpoint and thought about putting it in a local yard. Any idea of what a boat yard would charge for selling a boat on consignment?
thanks
Krazy,
Depends on your location, boat style and price.
Most Trailerboat dealers will work on a rough 10%.
What sort of boat is it, and what are you asking?
What dealers are you considering using? Some are bettter than others, and locals in your area i'm sure can point you in the right direction.

location is mackay
boat is 540 coxcraft reef runner 540 as in classifieds on here
dealers would just be one of the 3 local yards.
the problem that I have is if I was going to give 10% to a boat yard I would rather just give the same price to a buyer and give someone a good deal.
Trouble is the yard will pump up the asking price so the sell could be very close to your private sale price anyway.
Consignment is asking for trouble IMO it works for some but very often the lack of respect shown to your stuff while awaiting sale (even borrowed for the weekend) or damaged/broken/roughed up is not unusual compared to the rig you dropped off.
Make sure everything not bolted down is at home, and you have a comprehensive list of everything fitted and whether it works or not...include fuel too, get them to sign of on it.
cheers fnq
Good consignment with a good dealer would you probably cost very little as they should get a better price than you would in your driveway but.............. there isn't a hell of a lot of honest dealers out there. Think of them as realestate agents.
A lot of sharks out there who just want your boat on there lot for free and do F^&*k all to sell it and just use it as stock and fodder to market their own boats. To get it o their lot they will tell you it is wort $50k and then slowly wear you down saying no buyers etc Be very careful on who you leave it with, their insurance , your insurance, damage , just getting filthy, theft, unauthorised test runs etc the list goes on. Do not sign an exclusive or term agreement without advice.
The other side is that a good yard would be secure fully insured etc and the salesman would be motvated to sell your boat at a good price and actually now the deytails ad history of your boat. They will wash and maintain it in the same condition as their own showroom boats etc etc
Salesmen have a lot of skills the general public don't so they can add value and allow more people to access your boat if they have traffic through their yard and ads on the internet. It means you don't have dodgy people coming to your house and dealers can pick the time wasters a bit quicker
Photograph and record the condition of your boat and get the dealer to sight and sign these so there is no dispute over damage or theft of items.
A lot of yards are just plain lazy and not in it for you
Hope you find a honest yard if you decide to go down the consignment track
As usual FNQ has given great advice! A few things i would add are! Get the whole deal in writing before you turn up with the boat ! Two mates of mine have sold through consignment and once the boat was in the yard a few day they tried to change the fees saying" The weekend sales guy has given you the wrong figures, commision will actually be............" It was the same yard on both occasions and i'm sure was not an accident! Watch out for add-ons, detailing , sending out for gell coat repair etc etc! They even make money on these and your far better to sorce them yourself !Check your insurance!!!!!!!! Really really important many policy's dont cover your boat in the sales yard and if not get in writing that the yards policy covers your boat! Some will also hit you hard for advertising , that's your call but it does add up quick!
Good luck
Ian
Oh yeh
Agree on a sales price and stick to it! If they drop 5 grand it makes bugger all differance in commision but the quicker sale help them, like estate agents some will tell you they can get great dollars for your boat and then once in the yard they'll be keen to drop the price for the quick sale!
Alcohol doesn't agree with me, but i sure do enjoy the argument!!!
When I sold my tinny last year I looked at consignment as an option,One very well known consignment yard in brisbane quoted me nearly 20% of what I was asking.
I ended up selling it here on ausfish to a young guy up the coast and both of us got what we wanted.I did drop my price for him but it didnt cost me 20%.
Now we were only talking about a 9.5k boat so maybe on bigger more expensive boats the rates improve but I was put off and personally wouldnt go back.
Cheers Craig

KF,
The theme of all of these replies is to do your homework well, as you should with any big ticket item like a car, house or boat.
There are some great dealers out there who want your boat sold (why else would they want it?), and there is some other dealers who are just plain back yard.
Look at their yard, contract, presentation, quality of other stock ect ect. These things will give your heart an idea of where you should stand.
I lived at Mackay around 2001, and Reef Marine back then had a great reputation. I don't know about any of the others. Boat's Galore at Bundaberg (a bit of a drive but maybe more market exposure and closer to Brisbane?) also does a good job with your type of boat, and specialises in used boats.
A lot of the time a yard can sell better than the individual for better money in a sale, still netting you close to your asking. They have much better exposure, marketing, prior customer base, walk in traffic ect ect than what the average Joe Blow does.
Good luck in your decision, and learn to trust your heart and head in such a decision. Talk to you local boaties at the ramp, and see who they recommend.
