Thread: Old style guides / wraps??

Smile Old style guides / wraps??

    Hi all

I am in the middle of doing up my grandfarthers old Blackfish rod. Its about 10ft long, tublar fiberglass and is yellow. I have spent the last couple of weekends cleaning up the blank, removing all the old epoxy / varnish rubbing it all back and Im ready to start wrapping.

The rod is fairly old and holds some great memories and I would like keep the "old fashioned" theme going with the guides and wraps. Unfortunately none of the original gudies were any good so they will all need to be replaced.

Any suggestions as to what guides might be suitable?? Also if any one has some photos or suggestions of some older style wraps I would be very interested to have a look.

    Thanks

It can be very gratifying to restore a fishing rod that has meaning to you.
The actual wrap is the easy bit and can be reproduced exactly if you have the original in a picture or something similar.
A lot of wraps are here. The software and website belongs to Dave Boyle who is a Brisbane local and a member here.
Now the hard bit is the guides.
What sort of guides were on your grand-dad's rod?
I have a lot of older threads on hand to match the quide wraps as well.
If I can be of any use with materials and machinery like rod lathes/dryers just drop a line.
    Enjoy the process
    Cheers Scott

    Thanks Scott

I have built a few rods over the years but this will be the first with so much history attached. The plan is redo a couple of the rods and drag the old man down to Port Macquarie for a weekend and try the old blackfish haunts

The rod was originally built by Len Butterworth. The wraps were just bands of red and black. Im hoping to do something different from the original but still keeping an old style look about it.

All up I have 3 rods in total that I want to restore and there are a few gudes on each that might be able to be recused. Out of the 3 I might be able to get 1 full set

The photos are the guides on one of the other rods. I have a play with them over the next couple of days and see if I can clean them up. But I will still be looking for 2 other sets for the other rods

The black and red was from the one spool.
Some of the local tackle shops might have some left.
The agate guides are not real common in Australia but can be picked up from ebay often.

    Thanks again

Im pretty sure the guides I have are not agate. They look more like a hardloy or similar. I will have a closer look when I get home...

Those carmet guides might be just what the doctor ordered. They look like they will be perfect.

Re: Old style guides / wraps??

    Just came across this thread - sorry;

I did up my old mans blackfish rod (now deceased, hence the project), about 11ft long and mustard yellow in colour. I did it back up to the same colour standard it was before i started, i'll snap some pics and post them up, i leave the rod stored at my mum's place (i dont fish for blackfish) so it may be after this weekend...

Thanks for the offer Mark. I will shoot you an email

Toxic.... It would be great to see some photos.

I had a closer look at the rods last night and the guides are definately not agate. Im going to try and clean a couple of the old gudies up and see if I can get them looking half decent.

2 of the rods are labled Pristine Power Rods by Len Butterworth.... the other is a Sportex..
