Thread: Bag Limit debate

    Thumbs up Bag Limit debate

    Hi everyone

Just wondering what all the recreational fishers think about sustainability of the fishery. Do we all think that bag limits are too big i personally believe that there should be a mix bag for example 20 fish per person per day so you can catch 10 snapper 5 whiting and 5 flathead. So other bag limits should apply but also have a 20 fish in total catch limit. What does everyone think of this idea?

    Re: Bag Limit debate

sorry for the spelling mistake above... should there "be" a mixed bag limit

    Re: Bag Limit debate

A mixed bag limit might be OK but there should be exceptions to fish species included in the mixed bag limit.
A total of, say, 20 fish per angler... no matter what the fish is will not work.
An example of the species not included would be varieties used as bait to start.
I intend on living for-ever....so far so good

    Re: Bag Limit debate

There is already a reef fish total bag limit of 20.

    What about leatherjackets? (Deep sea)
When those mongerels come in you can catch 20 in under an hour, if you had to give up and go home it would ruin a fun day.

Personally I think they should pay a bounty for every jacket killed when they are on.

Can you please explain to all forum members what scientific documentation you have researched to form this assertion.

I really pity any fisherman who has to deal with leatherjackets on a fishing trip, It's only happened to me once and they have to be the most @#$$%$$#@@@%%^%^$##$$%^%%#$$$%%#$$%^%$^%^%$$#$$%^% ^%%#$#@%% in all the sea!!!! I'm not normally one for deliberate extinction of a species but in this case i'm prepare to make an exception!

    Re: Bag Limit debate

I do not think this is a workable limit if plaed right accross the board on all species and all sectors of fishing.
For example, if you are drifting around for a feed of winter whiting your 20 limit can come up in as many minutes then your squid jig goes off and a nice calamari is in the net.....or whats say you try for winteries and score 18 and decide to slip up to the curtain arti for a snapp you snare one then you score a double hookup of reasonable fish should the whiting deny you three snapps?

If you are going to have total bag limits it needs to be segregated into pelagics, reefies and estuary/bread & butter fish.

    you asked........

    stupid idea.

would you take 5 whiting and then move on????????????? what would you do with just 5 whiting????????????????? feed the cat?

People are and should be free to catch their bag limit in as many species as possible, within the law, ie max number of reef fish etc.

    Unfortunately,
    in Nthn NSW,
the plauge seems to be getting worse every year.

I am never one to kill senselessly,
but not to many swim away from my boat,

it's just a good thing that they taste good,

    Re: Bag Limit debate

    fishyfrost.

There has been many many threads, opinions and facts pertaining to your question.

There have been, over the last 10 years, many many RIS ( Regulatory Impact Statements ) released to the public for comment.

The DPI&F have updated and upgraded bag limits, size limits and ' mixed bag limits ' over the years to attempt to get a balance for a sustainable fishery.

I believe many recreational anglers here have attended public meetings, filled out RIS's and offered opinions to the DPI&F in relation to our fishery.

Most recreational anglers believe the DPI&F have got it just about right or at least are attempting to get it right.

You asked about a ' per person per day '.... that is out of the question. The limits are and will always be " in possession ". And as stated above, there is a mixed bag limit on CRFF of 20, again, in possession.

I believe the vast majority of recreational anglers abide by the current rules and regulations as they can see the benefits of a well managed fishery.

    good reading here:-

    http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/dp...2_ENA_HTML.htm

A lot of science , research, anecdotal evidence and other factors have gone into providing us with the current rules regarding recreational fishing and the guidelines for a sustainable fishery. There are ongoing status reports and research to monitor the fishery in the hope of reaching that elusive ' sustainable bio-mass '.

More good reading on this and similar subjects in the Ausfish News forum.

    Cheers Phill

    Re: Bag Limit debate

quite a debate we have sparked here... i'm just venting some of my personal opinions and yes quite agree with the fact that some species should be excluded such as bait fish and by the sounds of it this plauge of leather jackets. Muz maybe this should be something that some research needs to be done into. From my understanding alot of research comes from the information tha fisherman such as ourselves provide the authorities, with a higher level of communication between interested parties will lead to a better more sustainable fishery. I recently listen to talks from all sides of the industry rec, commercial, complience and the scientist and managers in a unit i did at uni and it was interesting to get a view from each side. From the sounds of it trends are changing and people are starting to work together. QLD are also much further advanced in the way they manage their fishery compared to NSW so hopefully NSW follows some of the directions the QLD have.

    Gees I hope not.
I'll leave it at that because my heart doesn't need the aggravation.
