Loomis vs Lamiglas

Has anyone had any experience with the G Loomis Surf Series?

I was thinking of the 2-pce 10' 6"fast action model SUR 12665 for general beach work, tailor etc etc

But I heard that the rod guides on them are pretty ordinary (supposedly they aren't Fuji but some other kind). I heard they're prone to wearing out or cracking.
Do not know the truth in that though.

And, LAMIGLAS make a comparable model in their 'Ron Arra' Surf Pro rods. They have a 10' 2-pce med/fast action one. Model XSRA 1204, with Fuji aluminium oxide guides.

You will not get much change out of $400 for either of these rods. Both are reputedly very light and cast a mile.

Any feedback or opinions on which rod might be the better of the two?

Your as bad as i am with the search for rods. I hope that someone has owned these rods and replies. I have looked into them both for some time and also the StCroix range from the US, they all look like great rods but without holding one i didnt want to take the risk. The aussie dollar doesnt help either. I liked the StCroix and Lamiglass rods over the G Loomis because of the reviews on stripersonlinedotcom. Another range to have a look at are Dakau rods. I have just come across these through another ausfish member and they look awsome but may be a bit heavy. More suited for LBG spinning than a general allrounder though. Some members may have used these rods and might be able to give some feedback. Have a look at Stripersonline and also look up Dakau rods on sportfishingextreme ? ( Look at setthehooks homepage, it has a link to this site ). For me i settled for my Tiralejo that i had already and am very happy with it but will look for some thing else a little different when my budget allows.
Let us know what you settle on.

Yeh its great to do the research but when it comes to the crunch you need to be sure of your decision, especially if you haven't actually tested the rod yourself and are going on specs & reviews.

Thanks Scott for the extra info & tips. I never really heard of the Dakau range before. I'll suss those sites out that you mentioned.


It reminds me a bit of when I did plenty of barra n bass baitcast fishing in PNG from 04 to 07. I was always on the lookout for my next reel or rod. I have quite a good collection now, a few top shelfers too. Will I use 'em again? Yep, expect to..!



At the moment I'm "looking" at surf fishing set-ups (rods first) to see what options are available for something decent.

At some point 'looking' will likely translate into 'buying', then I'll be able to say to the missus "Haven't you noticed it before? I've had it for ages...maybe its b'cos I haven't used it much!?" (that's after its been smuggled into the house minus the tags, when she's out shopping)

The guys over at sportsfishextreme will tell you all about the Dakau rods particularly the Longtail. Rob who runs the above forum did an excellent review of the longtail, go check it out

I have the Lami Ron Arra surf rod, and whilst it is pretty good for an of the shelf rod, it is nowhere near the quality of custom built rods (imo). Don't get me wrong, it casts a mile and has a very direct action when loaded on a decent fish, but the ferrule connection looks a bit cheap (compared to eg. jap sticks).

If I were in the market for a "specialist" surf rod again, I'd either get a custom made graphcast/hasting for plugging or a saltiga surf for bait.

Any tips on likely suppliers (oz and/or overseas) that have a selection of saltiga surfs at reasonable prices. I'll Google it later.

Any suggestions on a model that resembles the Lami & Loomis I mentioned above?

I suppose if the Saltiga surf rod is the go it'd warrant matching up with the Daiwa saltiga spinning reel (gotta look the part, after all).

That matching combo would blow a few cobwebs out've the wallet.

PS. Just did a search. The Saltiga Ballistic is over 13ft long & more than US$400. The standard saltigas are under US$200 and are available 10, 11 & 12ft (2-pce).

I could be very wrong but the Sensor Surf sold in aus may be the same as the Saltiga 10,11 & 12' sold in the US. Mo has the Sensors. I have an 11 4' overhead Sensor Surf and it is nice.

Speaking of investigating I sussed out the St Croix beach rods from USA.

The top of the range 2-pce 10' 6" "Legend" is going at US$420 (cheapest I could find - most are $450 plus).

When I enquired about postage to Oz it was a phenomonal US$150.00 ...sheeesh, wouldn't read about it would you!



The supplier reckoned that all packed up the shipping weight'd be about 5lb and measure 7' 3" in length.
