This is a barra....isn't it? Have caught them before around Mackay, but this is the first we have caught close inshore in the open. Just hard to believe that they get so dark. Wife is chuffed, will be her first barra if proven so.
Cheers

Nice catch noiseworks - that's a Sand Bass, aka Reef Barramundi, aka Jewel Eye. That's a fairly decent size - you don't tend to get much bigger than high 30's
No size limit and they taste great (my wifes favourite)
Cheers

Shattered......my wife that is. She caught 2 of them today and we did the right thing and let them both go because unsure of type and relevant size requirements. Will know better next time.

Also known as Barramundi Cod, based on a poster I saw in the ol fish and chip shop tonight.
I think that poster might be leading punters astray Chamelion......
Nick
Noiseworkks,
Don't feel bad about throwing them back. That way who knows maybe some other lucky punter may enjoy catching such a great species A photo last longer than a feed!

Yeah Sand Bass definitely not a Barra Cod.. Caught a few up north.. Don't grow real big and fairly rare as i would of only ever seen about 2 or 3 landed.. Cheers Sean
Yea, they are not rare, maybe rarely targeted. They like coastal waters, inshore, close to deepwater. The like structure. They do, at first, look like a baby barra. Cool photo. Happy Days,
Johnny
You'd know a barramundi cod if you saw one, they're one of the prettiest fish going around. They are also bright white (with spots)
Sand barra (bass).
