24Volt Minn Kota & 85 Amp Hr Deep Cycle Batteries

    G'day,

Would two 85 Amp Hour AGM sealed batteries (Full River brand) be suitable for a 24 Volt 65LB Minn Kota electric on a 4.1m tinny, for say 2 days of pretty solid use.

The Minn Kota has a MAX AMP DRAW of 38amps.

Most of the time I have the speed setting on about 4 or 5 on a range of up to 10.

Current batteries are Century Marine Pro 500 and have lasted 3 years.......which is not too bad considering they are not even a Deep Cycle. I am unsure what Amp Hour rating these ones even are but they used to last about 1 1/2 days.

I am considering buying the 85amp hr batteries due to space/weight etc. It would also mean I wouldn't have to buy 2 more bigger battery boxes.

Is anyone running similiar sized batteries with success?

    Cheers,
    Roo.

    Hi Rooboy,
I have a 455 hornet with a 70lb riptide minn kota bowmount motor that is approximently 6 months old. I have 2 130Ah trojan batteries that are about the same age as the motor ( 6months ) I tend to motor around at full speed ( 10 minutes or so ) then cast at low speeds ( setting 2 or 3 ) I have done up to 8 hours and not lost any speed BUT when get home and put back on charger it suggests that the batteries are about 70% used.
So trying to get 2 days out of 2 85Ah batteries don't think so ??
I have found the more you spend on batteries the longer you will get out of them, I had 2 century batteries that I pretty much killed off in 2 1/2 years bought my first trojans and got 5 1/2 years out of them.
    Hope this helps
    Paul

    Thanks Bud-dy,

The Trojan batteries do sound like a pretty popular choice on here (from reading previous old posts).

I might have to look at moving up to the next battery size just to be sure. Going from 85AH to about 120AH is only about an extra $60 each in the Fullriver range.

    Thanks,
    Roo.

Thanks for reminding me of them. That was one brand that I meant to research earlier but ended up forgetting about. I'll check em out.

Twin 85s would give you around 1 days full use

I have 2 x 100amp AGMs ( Absorbed power) on my 480 Hornet & there would be only a small charge left after a big day ( currents or wind).

So 100s are a minimum (wet cell) & 120 is better - They will last longer with the lower discarge

    Thanks Chris,
I'm thinking I will go a pair of 120AH AGM batteries now.

Just lashed out on a decent CTEK charger yesterday arvo so I might as well spend the extra $ now and get a pair of decent sized batts to suit.

    Cheers,
    Roo.

Sorry Roo ....... Keep in mind the AGMs are not cheap - you could be up for $800-$1000 a pair

I would not worry about the AGM's. Consider that you got three years out of you current batteries and how much they cost then do the math. The AGM's will last around the same time, maybe a bit longer if you really look after them.

Yeah, I would be looking at about $740 for the pair of new AGMs (Fullriver 120 AH) delivered to Townsville.....plus I will have to get 2 new larger battery boxes, add about another $45.

The other option I suppose is to buy 2 more of what I'm currently using (at only about $390 for the pair). They are not even Deep Cycle but they already have the runs on the board in my boat.

I just checked the old purchase receipt....January 2005....so they are actually a bit over 4 years old!

The $400 I'd save would certainly buy a few new lures..........question is I suppose, will I be lucky enough to have the next set last another 3-4 years?

    Decisions, decisions....how will I spend that $900?

    Cheers,
    Roo.

Even if you buy wet cell deep cycle. The bonus with wet cell is that they can be maintained. So long as the plates remain, and the remain seperated your battery can be maintained. To get ten years out of a well maintaind wet cell lead acid is not impossible. Why do you think telco's use flooded lead acid batteries!

This would be another alternative for $955.

    2many,

Remember me?? (Sorry guys for posting in this tread but cant PM him...) Can you please PM and explain why you have ignored me after making a promice??

To everyone else, Most of these batteries are great and would do the job... but just one thing, dont go too cheap, go with a brand that you know and is trusted... and if it comes with a 2yr warranty that sounds like the one I would get.

I bought a brand new battery for $350, came with only 3months warranty and wasnt a known brand... I will never make that mistake again.
