    Easter holiday Surf Mulloway

Since the moon phase was just fit in the timing of easter vacation, I and my mate Rubent planned to trace some big mulloway down to the beach. After 2 hours baiting, we got couple of baby squid and yellowtails then head beach to find out a nice slough that might hide fish. Fishing from around 9 p.m., 2 hours before high tide. We rig a squid strip with a 9/0 gamakatsu circle and 8/0 octupus and something big directly jump up to the end of my line in 5 mins. After a couple of hard pulling, I finally landed this nice jewie at 82cm weight at 4.4kg. Then we got couple of smaller jewie from 43cm to 64cm soon. But the jew time does not keep long. In the next 2 hours, the squid strip kept smashed by hungery sharks, rays and tailors. I thus change to use livie on 8/0 circle hope can get rid of that stuff. However, bloody embaracing by the tailors 2. Their strong jew and bloody teeth chopped the livie just like knife. The baits consumed soon in 1 hour then we choose to call it a day. 2 keeper and the others released right after landed.

Hi, Icmitch. Great to c angler care about their fish population. The legal size in NSW is 45cm and 75 cm in SA. Hope can get another vacation down SA or WA to trace some really huge monster mulloway.

Hi, scoocer101. Mulloway is always the dream of serious anglers, cause its rare, its beauty, and probably most important - it is a honour of perseverance and ur skill to trace it, especially on the surf. Well, I do tracing these lovely fellow quite hard in the past few years. I read a lot of articles about surf reading in order to learn how to identify the structure that might hold fish and spent heaps of time to sit on the beach to record the fishing condition then contrast to the results. Now, for me, jew fishing on the surf is not as hard as when i just began to. It is actually not a tricky fish. Everyone know the simple running rig works well for jewie. So, just one thing have to be mentioned, the spot. Found a right spot is really the most important part in jew hunting. Then, + ur fresh bait, it will jump in ur bag as u expected at the right timing. Cheers.

Great report Sparks. Good to see someone who studies the prey and executes the plan. They are not hard to catch .....once you have put the time and effort into studying their habits, habitats, and all the other things that give you the 'edge' when targetting this beautiful fish.

What beach were you fishing (im not going to steal your spot...I am in Qld....but i am curious to see how my old haunts are faring)?

Hi, Greg. That's exactly what i mean.

I live in Wollongong city. So generally target on several local beach which length from 2 to 5 miles like Corrimal beach, Windang Beach, and Fairy Meadow beach. Around that beachs, u can find several small islands in ur sight or estury along side. Especially My favourite point-Windang beach. It has a long coast line and the biggest salt water lake in Illawarra which produce tons of shrimp and baby fish just sit on its right side. On the left side, it has 5 islands and a vast and deep port kembla.

Sounds like a heaven for jewie, isn't it?

Hi, Mick. As my experience, new moon are not so productive as full, but still caught a few around 10% moon during last year. As long as u can find and cast ur offering into the deep enough slough or the head of rip current, u get actually quite close to them. Hope this help. Cheers.
