Shimano Lucanus Jigs

Had a pretty good Easter using a range of Lucanus jigs.
We used 200,150 and 80 gm versions for a reasonable catch of Kings,Snapper and Trag.Water depths ranged from 60m to 120m
I especially like the compact size for the heavy weight,they out performed several different knife type jigs.
The jigs even worked well thru the night on the Trag however we did bait them when the fish got slow.
Interested to know how they work on reef species also can someone help with replacement skirts as it gets costly using them when the jackets are about.Our local tackle shop sells the skirts for $4.00 each.

I have caught sweetlip and trout on them. It is annoying to lose the skirts, unfortunately I don't know of a cheaper option for Lucanus skirt replacements.

I have found them good for Nannies though have also had much problem with the skirts. They rip off rather easily.........

The skirts appear to be a standard skirt used for spinnerbaits and such. In Australia "kingston lures" would sell them or if you want to buy a lot, barlows tackle in the US sell them for around 30 - 40c each plus postage. these skirts will not have the 2 longer thicker bits in them though.

They work well on off shore flatties in pink.
Gillies make a similar and much cheaper version called octas,they work just as well on flatties as their more expensive Shimano cousins.

I think they have a minimum US $100 order for overseas customers. Then you have to add postage which for me was more than US $50 for two lure molds and some wire forms. So unless you are after a few things it may not end up that cheap. I was a bit pi$$ed at the postage cost, a reel from America only cost US $25.

The Hooks on the jigs are no good if you hook a big trout or hard pulling red. Way to small and bend straight easy. Is these a way of putting a larger hook with wire on em?

I've heard the same. I wouldn't suggest putting a large hook in them... but you may get away with a slightly larger hook. I've seen a bloke bin the standard hook set up & replace with very strong decoys/owners/gamu's... & also replace the dacron with some heavier duty dacron with heat shrink over it.

My father and grandfather were both Wally's and the old mans boat was called Indulgence, I guess we dont have much of an imagination in our family.

I have changed the hooks to a larger size using Williamson assists in 5/0 they dont stop the lure from working.
The area off the Central Coast NSW is plagued by ocean leatherjackets, they have been here for nearly 2 years now and they eat anything you drop down. I managed to catch 1 of these terrors with a jig the other day only to find 3 of the jig hooks inside when we cleaned it. We were fishing 120m and for this fish to end up with three hooks it must have hit at least 3 jigs.
