    Re: Transmission cooler for towing

I'm not sure if you're talking to me, but where did I tell him to rip it into his car? I merely told him that I have an AU falcon, that I put one in and for what reasons I put it in.
Then I posted a rebuttal to your post...

Read the thread again, much more carefuly this time.

Commonly known as a radiator? Yes they heat the oil as well as cool it to prolong the life of the box - isn't that what we're trying to do?. Who assumed Jeffbqld has an AU?

I've had aftermarket coolers fitted too (last one was to a 2003 v6 auto hilux). Any decent mech will suggest that the cooler is fitted -in conjunction with the radiator - ford owners with plastic internals are excepted.
I agree that installed correctly the can only be of assistance to an auto box, but just because it works in a particular way for your car that obviously has design faults does NOT mean you should jump on the net and tell some poor bloke to rip into his car when you don't even know what it is
No,it would be a stand alone cooler completely bypassing the radiator with a built in thermostat generaly considered not necessary unless resideing in areas that snow.Mate I don't have a clue what Jeffbqld drives but I'm confident that his own research will guide him to the correct set up for him,my previous reply with your quote simply points out that Chamelions statement was correct and yours was wrong.

    Re: Transmission cooler for towing

I started this thread to see if anyone has had problems with their automatic transmission while towing and to see if you are using a additional transmission coolers.

White Pointer mentioned halving the oil change/service period of your transmission. I think thats a great idea and thats also mentioned by a mechanic on a web site I was looking at which I found on google.

The auto column is halfway down the page.

    http://www.mr4x4.com.au/index.php/touring-tips.html

    He also recommends transmission coolers.

A bit further down you will find his comments on transmission coolers. It starts
"So what else can you do to improve the life of your automatic? Well fitting an auto transmission oil cooler is a great way to extend the life of the automatic transmission fluid as well as the life of the transmission, and here is why".
He writes a fair bit on the subject so if your interested click on the above site.
by the way I don't drive a AU but I found Chamelion comments interesting and what he did has fixed the problem. All AU owners out there should be thanking him if they were unaware of the problem.

Not sure if this is common knowledge but the BA falcon also has the same problem as Chamelion AU. That is the transmission cooler inside the radiator fails and the coolant mixes with the transmission oil.

You think Ford would of fix the problem as it sounds like it has been there for some time over a few models.

If you have a BA falcon, it is worth checking out.

any auto car can suffer for a broken internal radiator. the internal cooler is not just a cooler but it uses warm engine coolant to WARM up the auto quicker as some autos won't do certain thigs (like drop into overdrive) until up to N.O.T.

this is why I recommend that the internal radiator be used. also when do this way the system also holds a small amount more oil

You would normally fit an auxilary cooler in conjunction with the factory cooler. You dont bypass the factory one unless you want problems with the auto. If you do the local trans rebuilders will love you.

Benz have had problems with radiators leaking into the trans as well, not just ford. Leigh

I've had my cooler in (bypassed internal) for a couple of years now come to think of it.. I've had no issues with my auto whatsoever, it feels bloody fantastic. I just did 1200km with 4 people, cargo area loaded to the roof and towing a chock full caged box trailer. Flawless

My lasy ford did 480,00 km including alot of towing with the factory cooler + aux hooked up, 3 auto services and still going strong. Your point is?
I would beleive the engineers at all the car manufactures before a interent story. Leigh

Give me a manual anyday.....it just does not feel right without a clutch and stickshift.

That being said though, the benefits in a sub-tropical climate of bypassing the radiator with a spearate cooler are good, the opposite in colder climates where you need to warm the fluids dramatically quickly.

As for the car companies utilizing combined coolant and trans fluid radiators, how can they ensure a vehicle fitted with separate coolers will not suffer damages if driven in a cold environment?? They would be held liable for issuing a car that is not suitable for arctic conditions causing it to fail. Hence why most vehicles use a combined unit. You can drive a combined unit without problems in all climates it is a different kettle of fish the other way around unless the trans fluids are apssed through a thermostat controlled heating system.
