    Transmission cooler for towing

Have you had your automatic transmission fail due to towing?

Has anyone installed a auxillary transmission cooler that connects to the front of your car's radiator?

    Re: Transmission cooler

I put a cooler into my AU falcon.. It's a PWR kit that I bought from Ebay. My reasons for installing it were a) to keep the transmission cooler, especially under towing and b) to bypass the radiator as they have a habbit of corroding internally cuasing coolant to enter the transmission, which kills the auto box.

It was easy and I wasn't very confident at all.

    Thanks Matt

Repairing a automatic transmission would be costly so I think it would be a good investment to put in a cooler. Good to know that they are easy to put in.

If coolant gets into an auto it's essentially cactus. You either need to replace it or recondition it. You're looking at a fee of between 5 and 20 times what it costs to install a cooler, depending on your car. Cheap insurance.

Fitted an engine oil cooler when the turbo went on and its a manual GQ. Put on a timer too.

All oils need to be cool.(ish)

    Re: Transmission cooler

yes I have had the tranny give up from towing...
You could tell it was from towing as you could smell it when towing.
    I did 2 trannies in a camry V6 towing a pollycraft.
it was a company car so I was not allowed to put a cooler on

    G'day,

You didn't tell us what the car was, the engine or the tranmission and how much work it has done so far.

    I suggest:

    1. Read the owner's handbook

    2. Ask a dealer of the make of car you own

    3. Come back to us with more information

    Hi White Pointer

I have been doing some research on google and I will be putting a cooler on my tow vehicle.

Towing will overheat the oil in your automatic transmission which can cause a transmission failure $$$.....but if you have a F100 and you are towing a 12 foot tinny I think you would be OK without one.

    Cheers

I'm with W.P. on that one.

Some posts here (chamelion) are alluding to bypassing the radiator all together and relying on a $100.00 tranny cooler kit???? What were the manufacturer's thinking when they could have saved all this money?

Towing will not necessarily hurt an auto box, or overheat it.

    Re: Transmission cooler for towing

    G'day,

My 2002 Land Rover Discovery diesel auto and my Holden Rodeo 2007 diesel auto do not need a transmission cooler for towing up to their capacity. The Land Rover's is 3.5 tonne and the Rodeo is 3.0 tonne.

Both are 4x4 with a low range gear set. Both manufacturers recommend that moving away from rest on ramps and hills should be done in low range to reduce load on the transmission.

My BMT is 2.0 tonne and at that weight I have to halve the oil change and filter/strainer replacement intervals.

    Hope this is useful.

Sorry, but it's a FACT that the PWR kits are extremely good for the money and are SIGNIFICANTLY better than the stock, through radiator option. The radiator core section fot the transmission fluid is smaller than the PWR heatercore and is already hot due to the coolant nearby.

Ford had/have it in their best interests to do it the way they do. They save money and then later make money (when peoples transmissions cook).. Why else would they claim that AU auto boxes don't need to be serviced?

Oh, my auto shifts much better now too, thanks...

Auxiliary coolers are what part of the towing package on our trucks here are all about . If you can add a extra cooler , Oil or Tranny, do it .

Kind of like why do the manufactures only put 5 or 6 quart oil pans on cars when a 10 or 12 quart pan would do a MUCH better job at extending the life of your motor.

And yes I lost my E4OD in my F350 ford last June on the way to Florida with boat in tow .
You would think that them Trannies would last more than 18 years . It was a 1990 F350 4X4 , 460 CID , SRW, XLT Lariot

Chamelion is spot on with what he is saying,it is common knowledge that ford vehicles that have the trany cooler inside the radiator are susceptible to having the cooler (plastic) rupture causing a very expensive fix, this has occured on vehicles that are not used for towing as well.My research on the matter led me to totaly bypass the original with a PWR unit complete with an aditional in line filter,I also run a pure Penrite synthetic oil.If you were opperating in colder climates you would be advised to go with an external cooler that had a thermostat incorporated into it's workings as well, as having to cold an oil is detrimental as well.

    Re: Transmission cooler for towing

When I ordered my new falcon ute to have the 2.3 ton tow bar fitted, it comes standard with a tranny cooler for the Auto transmission only. Never had a oil issue.

Manual boxes only pull 1.2ton... why ??? dunno.

Commonly known as a radiator? Yes they heat the oil as well as cool it to prolong the life of the box - isn't that what we're trying to do?. Who assumed Jeffbqld has an AU?

I've had aftermarket coolers fitted too (last one was to a 2003 v6 auto hilux). Any decent mech will suggest that the cooler is fitted -in conjunction with the radiator - ford owners with plastic internals are excepted.
I agree that installed correctly the can only be of assistance to an auto box, but just because it works in a particular way for your car that obviously has design faults does NOT mean you should jump on the net and tell some poor bloke to rip into his car when you don't even know what it is
