    Backbone trolling rods

What is the best rod to buy for gamefish trolling off moreton / sunny coast

Reels will be TLD 25's. Line will be between 10 and 15 kg.

What specific class of line would be the best choice?

With the rods, which would be best:

Elite BB 15 kg - roller tip

Elite BB 24 kg - roller tip

Elite BB 24 kg - top eye ring tip

    or something else

opinions would be appreciated along with reasoning. I have not done a real lot of trolling type fishing, so need to find out the pros and cons

    cheers

    Mick

Purchased 4 x 15 kg Shimano Backbone rods today, for the pure magic price of $77 each.

Ask for a price reduction, and ye shall sometimes recieve......

They have the roller tip, but on advice recieved, I will change the tips over to top ring tip guides instead.

    mick,
i have a bb 15kg stick & the first thing i did was change the roller tip (using braid).
also they are a good strong stick, no complaints here.

Why, change the tip over? Roller tips have a lot less friction! If you are trolling outside chances are you will pick up big pelagics or small marlin that could take off at hi speed in the opposite direction... on relativelly light mono this can create a huge amount of heat with a ring tip - how many pro game boats do you see trolling with ring guides on their rods?

The Shimano Backbones tend to be a bit soft for there marked line class - so a "15kg" rod is probably better suited to 10kg line. The plus side is you will fit a good 6-700m of quality (say Platypus Pretest, IGFA rated) mono on your TLD25 that will handle a run from a juvenile Black.

I had a set of the earlier model 24kg Backbones that had a full set of roller guides that accounted for some nice fish! I'm guessing Shimano don't have a full roller rod in the new series to encourage game fishos to buy the very nice but much more expensive Tiagra rods.

    Cheers

    Hey Trueblue

You also might want to have a look at the Taipan Extream From Shimano as well I have used the Backbone rods as well they are both very good rods for off the rack we use them for chasing billfish in the 8-10kg line class. And the Taipan is a Bit less on the pocket always a good thing. Mate you wont go wrong with the backbone rods.

I agree the rollers are very good but you must look after them Just keep the Lanox or Inox up to them if you are going the mono line And don't get fluro line it degrades alot quicker the clear or blue lines
