strip the reel down, remove all the grease from the gears and bearings, and use light machine oil on the moving parts. This is quite a common problem with reels in very low temperatures. When you have trouble casting because the line has frozen to the spool, or the guides are blocked with ice...give me a yell and I will tell you how to fix that. Or give ScottMitchell a PM....he used to be a guide and own a tackle business in the Snowy Mountains. Its a pain in the arse (and other extremities) but the rewards can be outstanding.

In cold tempertures you need to remove normal grease as it become lumpy and hard when cold, oil will help muchly but remember that when you are in a warmer area you will need to regrease the gears and bearings as the oil will not lude the reel gears and bearings enough

    Re: reel seizing

Cameron, I have fished the lakes in tassie when it didnt warm up all day.....and after the first cast the wet line froze itself to the spool, with icicles forming on the guides, my eyebrows and my beard. Have also had the same experience at Eucumbene and Pejar. Why do we subject ourselves to such extremes.....lol.

I suppose when you watch double figure Browns and Rainbows tailing in the shallows its hard to resist.
