    Re: Home made sinker warning

As a Chemistry teacher, I would think that lead compounds from the corroded surface of old lead that is being recycled, or lead dust from sanding that is trapped under fingernails would be a major hazard. How many of us use a nail brush when we wash our hands and how many bite fingernails at some point during the day.

The amount of lead needed to cause some health problems is small and as it is not excreted by the body its effect is cumulative.

    Regards, Rob.

to be fair dinkum about the lead you would need a fume hood with a HEPA filter..rather costly.

One of the reasons water tanks were banned in Brisbane was due to the lead in the solder used during their manufacture and also lead flashings on the roofs...people were drinking the water and getting increased lead levels.

The lead in the tanks was only a small part of the problem, the lead in every single nail in the roof, all the moulded in place flasings were lead and any shaped metal work including the gutters were soldered.....all this lead was exposed to weathering and broke down much faster than the soldering in the tanks.

But if you go on a current day roof that has lead flasings you will see how lead moves and makes its effcets.....( I used to crawl on roofs for a living at one time)....here we have roof that has not been cleaned for quite some time, there is a fair bit of mould and litchen all over the roof, except for where the water has flowed off the lead flashing..... there there is a mild staining of the iron or the tiles, runnig all the way to the gutter, there is no mould or growth in this area.

If you are to be fair dinkum about lead..... yep you need to be using extensive safety measures.... many of them are detailed in the post by Lucky Phill.
Gloves, goggles, disposable clothing, respirator.... and so on.

There are some who have reasonable concerns about handling sinkers in the process of fishing......

This lead stuff.... it is a very common seemingly clean material that has been arround for centuries......while it is not highly poisonous are immediately dangerous......it is far less safe that a great many would like to think.

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.
