    Yamaha Motor Covers

I have recently bought a new motor for my boat (a 60Hp Yamaha 4 stroke). The salesman has advised me to buy the Yamaha Boat Motor Cover (Approx $180). Are they actually worth the money? What do they provide for the cost?

    Splendid,
For me it's the pride and preservation of my engine. Down the track if you ever want to sell your engine, the appearance is going to look a whole lot better than an engine cover that has been exposed to the elements. If you intend to sell you engine in the future I think it’s worth the $180 investment.

If you concerned about the cost of a genuine cover, a motor trimmer will be able to make you one for around half the cost. Also I noticed some large retail outlets that sell "Boating, Camping and Fishing" items also have a cheaper alternative to a genuine cover.

    Cheers, Jado

Blatant ripoff just to have a brand name printed on the side. And they would probably be made in China too!

Just go to a boating store and get a generic one. Many are just as good, if not better and 1/4 - 1/3 the price.

I want to buy one as well. But all the generic ones look like a piece of pus. Does any body know of a generic one that looks like and performs like the genuine article?
As far as being made in china once you add up FOB costs insurance and freight then multiply it by 1.48 to bring it to Au dollars, then add on 5% import duty and then 10% gst and after all that all the port charges ++++++++++++ and transport costs from the wharf, then the importer sells to a distributor/ wholesaler, then the shop owner has to factor all his costs into it and after all is said and done makes 7% net before tax, then Johnny wanders in and complains about the price.........

    G'ay Splendid,
Mate i recently bought a new 80 4 stroke yammy had the same issue as u.
ended up with the genuine cover over the generic brand, qaulity much better
fit perfect and its lined with a woolen felt type material, better than just the inside of vynil,as Jado said its all about looking after your investment im sure after spending thousands of dollars on a new outboard couple hundred more aint gunna hurt.or on the other hand buy a generic brand and save ur 80 bucks,
get what u pay for(most ofthe time).
local yammy dealer in bundy here have a generic cover made locally which aint bad at all fit really well. Not loose like some brands but no lining think there around hundred bucks, good luck with the decision pm me if ur interested in a generic one from here might be able to get one a bit better price for u,i know the locals pretty well.
    cheers Paul
ps Sharkymark2 pm if ur interested too in a generic brand i'll get some photos for you of one fitted and post it up

With these OCA covers has anyone ran at a specific fast cruise speed while watching the rpm and fuel use then done the same with it off?? It's the only thing stopping me from purchasing one for my boat.

    cheers fnq

    G'day

No I haven't, but every outboard i've detailed with this cover has been kept in awesome condition, year after year. They do fit extremely well and have the mesh where its meant to be to allow airflow.

Hey Dave do you think the mesh could be removed without compromising the rest of the cover?

    cheers fnq

Not sure, depends on the model I think? Bit sure why you'd want too, it's pretty free flowing.

    Re: Yamaha Motor Covers

I bought my last boat from Buccaneers at hervey bay. Brendan the owner there had some bloker who did covers for about $250 i think, but it was a very good cover. I do a lot of crabbing adn prawning up in teh mangroves and this cover was tough as. Saved the cowl from heaps of scratches and when you go to sell it not only is the motor in better condition, but the cover is a selling point as well. Watch out because some of them you can't have on the motor when you're travelling. It'll just blow off.

Where do you get a genuine Yamaha motor cover?

The only ones that I've seen that are a good fit are the ones from this site, and they seem to be a little more than $180.00 http://www.outboardcovers.com.au/

I've got a great cover for my Yammy 4 stroke 200hp and it came with the boat. I bought it from Raymond Terrace Marine (Boss Of Boating) just out of Newcastle. They have a guy working there full-time who makes covers, bimini's, bunk in-fills etc. Not sure how much but being a Yammy dealer you will get the right fit.

    Picture attached.

Thanks for the info lads. Sounds like a good investment. I think I'll go for it. They do look good and will probably add value to the boat if selling is required.

Yamaha covers are made by Outboard Covers, but you cant buy from them direct, you have to go to a dealer, to get them.
Better to get your own design put on your own cover, direct from OCA.
