Run in/Run out

If fishing the mouth of a creek or river, is it best to fish the run in tide, or the runout. Opinions would be appreciated.

I'm thinking of something bigger than your usual flathead/whitting. Planning on fishing at the mouth of Reilance creek at Shoal Point (nth side of Mackay). Hoping to find some bigger stuff waiting for the bait.

As a general rule, an hour or so each side of high tide is generally a good time... although some species can be found an hour each side of low tide too

As already stated, different species will fish better on different tides. Also, the moon and the time of year can make a big difference.

Others will find it different, but in certain creeks I have found that the run in during the day can be more productive for smaller stuff, and the run out at night for larger predators(and vermin). This doesn't work all the time, but it is a general guide that works for me. So maybe try a run out tide at night to get some of the bigger things you are after.

I prefer to fish the run out around creek mouths. I find large preditors will often wait around creek mouths waiting for food to be washed out of the creek. If you can find a back eddy with steady water fed by the current you will often find large fish waiting in the still water ready to dart out into the current and smash bait fish as they come out. I find it esspecially effective in areas where the creeks drain dry and on the high tide there are large numbers bait up the creek or the creek feeds a large marsh area. Its a matter of matchin your offerings to bait fish that are running the gauntlet comin out the creek and you should find yourself hooked up pretty smartly.

Yeah i love fishing the runout at river mouths especially after a good rain
and when there is a distinctive silt line even better...usually the bait hangs out on the line and thats where the thumpers usually hang...i prefer the first of the run in for trevors as well..it all depends what your chasing
