I got 1 the other day at mooloolabah and thought it was a rock flathead. Definately a fat little bugger and quite aggressive hit on the scorpion.
Just called the Fisheries Head Office, and the word is that only the regulated species Bartail Flathead, Sand Flathead and Yellowtailed Flathead have the minimum size limit of 30cms and the bag limit of 5 in total of all species. Dusky Flathead still have the new size limit of 40 - 75cms and a bag of 5 also. All other species of flathead, such as the fringe-eyed flathead have no size or bag limits.
I discovered that there is now another species of flathead called the Yellowtailed Flathead (Platycephalus endrachentsis) which has a yellow bar along the upper margin of its tail. Differentiated from the Bartailed Flathead (Platycephalus indicus), which has the yellow marking in the middle or lower part of the tail.
