    bermagui fishing during May?

    Guys,
I have hitched onto a ride for a fishing trip to Bermagui in late may. I was wondering if anybody can tell me what is usually running and what I might expect to catch at this time of year?

    Cheers,

Tuna Time.......May/June is usually when the Yellowfin Tuna hit the area. There are still Y/T Kingies around Montague Island, and you will get the 'odd' marlin.....but its the tuna that are the main targets at that time in that area. You will also get southern blues and big eye tuna...and depending on the currents and how wide you are fishing....maybe even Albacore.....not to mention a myriad of blue and mako sharks (which follow the tuna).

Thanks Greg, I have never caught a kingfish, but I really want to have a crack at them this time. Is the island the only likely area to target them?

Sleepygreg's comments are just about spot on. Also a very good time leading up to Queens birthday for really big kings. I've seen them come in there over 30kg. Biggest I've tangled with at that time of year have been up to 24kg. Best to try south end of the island. Locate the ledges and drop offs and use your sounder to locate the fish. Best to set up a drift over or along a ledge if possible. Last time I was there was a couple of Easters ago and most guys were jigging for them. I still prefer a live yakka or slimy near the bottom. If you want some REAL FUN try handlining for them. Make sure you wear gloves or bike tubes though.
Try northern end of the island or head out to the canyons for yellowfin and albacore. Current and water temp will determine how well you'll go. You'll love the place, good luck.
