My boating has come to an end...

    Hi all,

Today whilst moving between fishing spots in the Mooloola river I ran aground on unmarked submerged rocks. My friend and I were thrown through the windscreen, which was completely torn from the hull, the boat now has a large 9"x4" or so chunk of damage in the bow which caused the boat to take on water quite fast, though we did manage to get her back to the ramp.

I have traveled through that section of the river many times before at all sorts of tide levels without any problems or indication of running aground, so I didn't expect to hit anything today. I thought perhaps we hit some sand, but my friend hopped out and felt rock beneath his feet, at that point I knew it would be worse.

    Damage to the boat-
Windscreen torn from hull, damage where screws were torn out
Bimini leg rivets torn from hull
Large chunk of damage to the bow
Chunks of metal taken out of the skeg

    Damage to my friend-
    Abrasions to his arm

    Damage to me-
Swolen and sore above left knee
    Sore/bruised right inner angle

It sure puts a massive dampener on our planned camping trip to baffle creek in less than three weeks.

At any rate, insurance should cover it, so if it's repaired I'm going to sell it. The wife just had a demotion so we were starting to think about selling it to make life a little easier through the financial 'crisis'. If it's written off, well, that might be the lesser evil.

The last bit of damage was minor in comparison and it was $1k to fix. I assume this will be an entire floor out job. I'm not sure if there is wood in that part of the boat, if there is then I assume it will be a bigger fix again.

Perhaps once financials stabilise we will looking at owning a boat again, but for now.. Well,

Thank you all for your help and advice in regards to my boat during the last few months. I'll still be here regularly, just in the fishing forums instead.

    Matt.

If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing rods.

    Hey Matt,
Sorry to hear it mate. Hopefully your insurance will come good. So where in the river were you? Was it just outside the last houses as you head up river or up a few more k's on the sharp right hander?

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

The first pic shows the area without my route, the second shows my route.. The rocks, assuming that tree in the water is the first tree and not the second that is there now, were in or very close to the red box.

Mate I feel for you. I had to come to terms recently with the idea of selling up, and it broke my heart. Now I don't have to sell her, so I'm happy, but I know the process.

    All the best,

Mate, sorry to hear your news.........remember; short term pain for long term gain.
You,ll come back better and in a bigger boat.
I have just started a new business venture which ultimately will determine whether I remain a boatie in the short - medium term.
All the best for the future.
    Cheers,
    Andrew

Thats a bugger mate. I know the feeling though....had to sell many of my favourite things to survive a period of unemployment following a nasty divorce a few years ago....broke my heart to let go of my boat, my limited edition ABU's, My Penn Inters, and my custom game rods (all with decorative wraps that I had put hundreds of hours into). The one positive is that you are still sitting here talking to us...could have been much worse. Keep ya chin up.

Timi........thats great news that Bubi is off the market.

    Cheers

    Thanks guys

I'll still be a regular here wilcara.. I may be off the water but fishing is my passion and plenty of people (including me until late last year) get along reasonably well land based.

Depending on what happens with the insurance/boat sale I might even be able to drop enough money to pick up a little kayak so I can at least get to some better spots - sand banks and the like.

same as all above... it's a pig of a year ...if you get through it with your health then the boat can be replaced/repaired in time. Good luck.
