Egrell s1 1-3kg vs Nitro Vapor 6'6 1-2kg

I want a very light rod with great sensitivity and good power on the butt.

When I got my S1, I got rid of an Ian Miller Bass Buster Finesse. The first fish I caught on it was a 53cm Bass. The S1 is a very very capable light spin rod. You will be happy with it.

I think you will find the Egrell S1 is rated 1-5kg. Two totally different rods, however if you are after a bit of power in the butt I would go the S1. I've never used the Nitro's though...

The S1 is a great rod and very versatile. Many members on this forum use this rod for their ultra light work for bream, whitting etc... all the way to Squire fishing in the river and Bay.

If you choose the S1 make sure you get the 2009 model with the ALPS guides. Many tackle stores still have the old model ones in stock.

My advice would be get your reel, take it to the shop and put it on both rods. See which feels better, balance wise and how it sits in your hand with the reel.

I've recently gone through the same situation. I already had a twinpower 1000 so I needed a lightweight rod to match it. I tried it on the vapor(7') and the S2 (couldn't get hold of an S1 near me) plus a few others. I took the vapor simply because it suited me the best (a gary howard CTS tournament would have won if i could have found more on the blank). The S2 was a very nice rod but for me I was not able to hold the reel and rod comfortably in my hand. It felt like i needed to keep moving my grip so that the reel sat between my 2nd and 3rd fingers or 3rd and 4th never comfortable in the one place. This is the only way I was able to tell, by actually having a play with them.

I got to use the setup for the first time on tuesday. Was a dream to cast, fantastic distance with the light poppers and the actions that the stick produced on the lures was exceptional. Unfortunately I didn't get a hookup to see how it performed in the battle arena .

So good luck with your search. Which ever you do choose will be a great rod.

Benny is refering to the S1 - 7 (1-5kg). Pretty sure there was also an S1 (rated 1-3kg)

The old ones have cts guides which have had a bit of a bad wrap. If its second hand, Just check to see if they have gone green on the guide frames.

Mine is a year old and no green yet so i think it has a lot to do with how well you clean your gear.

Both nice rods but personally the S1 is my pick but as Glenn said, match each rod with the reel you intend to use it with and the choice will become much easier.

I must say the S1 has been a bit of a revelation for me too. I do prefer the Egrell to the Bear as i prefer faster tapers, but i don't really use my G-Loomis' anymore thats for sure!!!

The old CTS guides are perfectly fine. I dont know how they can start to corrode?? Who spends 400++ on a rod and neglect it anyway. Any guides will deteriorate with bad treatment.

If its a really old one it may have fuji's on it. It may also mention "Woomera" on the blank too. These are the much older versions.

I washed my guides after every session, even wiped the guides with INOX. They still went green....

I have been through this all before.... however after having to change all my guides on my S2 to alconites and about to to do the same to my S4, it turns a $400 rod into a $500+ rod.

Don't get me wrong, I love the blanks but just do a search on this forum to see how many other members have had issues... The only reason why Eric change to ALPS on his new rods was because it was such a big issue..

They were fuji on the woomera blanks,American tackle titan on the next model and alps on the new model.The amtaks are a titanium frame zirconium insert guide.The Alps are stainless s6 frame zirconium insert guide.

Same here Benny. Love the rod - cant wrap it enough. Looked after it like no other rod before but they still went green. I have a t-curve that went on the same trips, sat next to it in the cabin and received the same cleaning process - hand washed with warm water/detergent mix, dried and inox for storage and it has no problems. That was the only disappointing thing given the pricing of the two rods.

I got it back now with the Alps and it looks great. Top notch job and it looks like it will be ready to go the hard yards for this years winter season

I've got 9 Egrells and none have had a problem with guides.

I had one that(probably) went all green.....but it was resting in 18 fathoms....before we parted company, no problems with the Amtack guides. got 2 others with Amtack guides but had very little use in salt and also no problems....It seems to be a bit of a random problem but one that needed fixing. the Alps guides should be fine. If your buying secondhand, a close look around all the guide frames should show up any problems as no matter how hard you scrub, you wont clean all the green goo off once it starts appearing.
