I've fished there a couple of times but found hopping the rocks a but hard on my knees.....that big flat rock on the corner can be a good position on the low.
My wifes brother used to fish there quite a bit and he recons there must be railway tracks along the bottom there..... because he has hooked things that just kept going straight in or out......
He used to like the low......because everything that was on the flats then has to be in the channel.
I hear there are some taylor arround if you are in luck.
OH... do us all a favour... take an extra plastic bag with you and pick up some rubbish before you leave.......there are some real grubs the fish there and they give us all a bad name.
cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.
Lots of great information there, thanks a lot for that. I went down last Sunday morning at 5:30 and caught a couple of small whiting off the rocks down at Raby Bay but nothing overly special. I'll be trying the mouth tonight if not the Cleveland ferry area. From what I saw I think it would fish really well. Lots of structure.
I'll let you guys know how I go tonight when I get back.
Cheers,
Mitch.
Well last night was pretty sh!tty. I don't know if it was the gear i was using but I didn't get a nibble the whole time I was there. I fished off the rocks in the main entry to canals for about an hour either side of the high tide. I really did think I was going to get something, but looks like I was wrong. It might have been the Gulp lures that I was using.
Better luck next time I guess.
Don't be to discouraged I have pretty much about the same luck as you, but I have a very limited skill set. I think there hasn't been a decent fish caught of there since about 3 days after God made the Earth![]()
The fish caught off there are just legends past down from generation to generation. I am joking I just don't want to admit that I suck...![]()
Guys, what you have to understand is that when working a new or unfamiliar area it is going to take a while to 'work' out that area. Tides, the wind, the moon, the time of day/night relevant to the tide and the time of the year or season will all have an effect on any fishing enjvironment.
It can take years to fully 'understand' what the fish will be doing and then still come up with a shocker or two.
I know when I fish places like wello I swear by an outgoing tide at night on a dark moon with a light souwester blowing. Put a northerly into the equation and its good night Irene. But, I have fished these areas for the last 25 odd years and that is what I have found best for me.
Someone else will have a place equally performing but get their fish at totally opposite times and tides to me.
All I'm saying is patience grasshopper. Fishing is like any other sport. A patient but eager mindset, a period of learning and lots of activity will at the end of the day get you to where you will produce fish on a regular basis.
Cheers
Shane
I have been down there a few times since this thred was put up. got a few stingray the first time and a small finger mark stingray on lite gear still good fun
I am guessing the "small finger mark" you refer to would have been a Moses Perch, a close relative but unfortunately we don't get Finger Mark this far down the coast. Lots of Moses Perch in the Bay and particularly in the canals. Size limit is 25cm and bag limit of 5.
My best out of the RB canals so far are;
58cm Snapper on a Squiggy Fish
56 cm Mangrove Jack on cooked King Prawn
Lots of bream to 36cm on bread, yabbies and lures.
several 60cm+ Flatties
Pike Eels so big they are scary!
Estuary Cod to 2.5kgs
Trevally to a couple of kilos, but have seen them over 10kgs!
I have not fished the canal entrance as such but there is some impressive structure there that comes up on the sounder when I go through in the boat. The tidal flow is very strong which is the biggest issue. Turn of the tide around dusk and dawn would be what I would be looking for there and try to keep your rig as light as possible.
I fish with 6lb line and a medium ball sinker about the size of a grape . it was a moses perch sorry about that fished lots of differant places in this fine country of ours. They call them by differant names in other states
