Am considering a move from tin to glass and I've heard of a cruisecraft explorer that might fit the bill. Details of its vintage and type are sketchy so I'm trying to find out when the current shape explorers first hit the showroom floor so that I can work out whether I invest any more time on this unit. Its a fantastic buy if it is what I'm looking for, complete with another TLDIGeez, lucky or what

The old mid eighties model was also called a 570 Explorer.
Great hull, and one that Outsider1's 580 Outsider series is based off.
Like this refurbed and podded version.
The first number you come to in the HIN will give you the build number for that model and I think that the last numbers give you the month and year but I'm not certain on that one,for example my HIN is CCBep120D202,the 120 is the build number (was told this by Kevin Nichols) but it could be coincidental that I ordered it in the second month of '02 I suppose.
They are a good unit....whichever one it is.

Well it wasnt what I was thinking it would be and doubt form my searches that its an explorer. Has a more outsider look about it but is probably earlier than that in outsider1"s avatar. Had two small windows on front of cabin. ?????
Anyway not what I was after or hoping for. Much older than I was expecting. Then again I should have realised when I was told the price.

Banshee, yep the 'ep120' would be the build or serial number.
FYI, the HIN # on any boat should follow an international standard. The first three letters 'CCB' is a registered code for the builder, Cruise Craft Boats in this case. (In some cases manufacturers add a 2 letter country code in front, ie 'AU' for Australia.
The next 5 characters represent the serial number, format/combination of the builders choice.
The next letter corresponds to the month that construction commenced on the boat (or when it was batched in the production schedule) , ie 'D' is the 4th letter in the alphabet, hence your boat was started in April (4th month).
The next and third last digit is the model year, and the last 2 represent the year of manufacture. (some builders release new models later in the year, hence if the last 3 digits were '302' it would mean it was an 03 model built in 02 etc.)
