just had my drag on a spinner upgraded, would this increase the drag load?

It depends on the reel, type of new washers, grease used, etc. But in most cases they tend to loose a slight amount of drag pressure.

    thanks Alan,
i went with the Erskine upgrade, carbon washers, dont know what grease was used thou, hopefully will run alot smoother and no more drag spike, i thought i would gain an extra 2-3kg drag, then i was told today i wont, who is right?

Mmm, i have not changed drag washes in a spin, but I have in a quite a few bc, the main reason was for better drag smoothness and higher drag capacity.

jack erkstine are very good washes.

So, your new drag washes, if a good brand will make a better drag system overall.

I have found that upgrades like smoothies and lube make the drag a lot smoother but definitely drop the max drag.

Good choice. Smoothness is guaranteed, but only testing would show if you gained or lost pressure. Very particular to the individual spinning reel, size, grease, etc.

    Good luck

Hey Daz did Rob (Erskine)do it ?.......They proberbly used Cal's grease........It's good stuff.

I think Erskin's only import Carbontex then re-package them as Jack Erskine carbon washer's..........not 100% but they are avaliable in the US

    Re: drag upgrades

    Daz,

I've bought Carbontex washers from Jack Erskine twice, for a Shimano Thunnus 6000F baitrunner and a Daiwa 4000 Bite'n'Run.

The Thunnus had a smooth drag with the old felt washers up to around 4kg, and locked up soon after. With the Carbontex washers, I measured smooth drag up to 8kg.

The Daiwa (a $120 graphite reel, made in China) had the worst washers I've seen in 15 years at least - some kind of black plastic-like material - and it had relatively smooth drag up to about 1.5kg, before it became too jerky to use. With the Carbontex washers, I measured smooth drag to almost 8kg. At the highest drag setting, the graphite rotor arm flexed so much that a screw scratched the spool. I wouldn't use a drag setting that high on this reel while actually fishing - I was just testing it.

Shimano Spheros's are often upgraded with Carbontex washers, converting them into jigging reels with much higher drag capability, as are Toriums. I think the original "Smooothies" drag washers were a different material.

To order the washers, I just sent an email to the address on Jack Erskine's site, stating the inside and outside diameters of the original washers. I was charged about $20 for each set, plus about $5 postage. I also bought some light Cal's drag and gear grease.

    Re: drag upgrades

Brent, thank for taking the time and putting up your thoughts, great bit of info, i will be heading out Saturday to give it a good run, i was having a big problem with the drag, only bit over 1/2 locked, way to much spike, which caused me dropping quite a few Hoo;s and Spanish, i am now hopeing that i can go back and enjoy this reel again
