Troy, 6 volts while cranking is too low and can indicate a battery problem and/or poor connections. Have you got any testing equipment? eg hydrometer/multimeter. If not try another battery as Dave suggests. Otherwise take the battery out and go and get it checked at a battery mob. How old is it and how often/long has it been left in a discharged state?
The best way to check a battery is to use a hydrometer. They are a pretty simple device and I am sure they can be had cheaply. Far more effective than using a volt meter. A good cell that is fully charged should read around 1.250 however on a hot aussie day you can expect a little more..
Should it drop back to 6 volts when starting the motor.
If it did not starting instantly and you had to wind the motor over a few times am i right by thinking there would be not much left in the battery.
Thanks
Troy
I would think that dropping to six volts during start indicates that your battery is too small. what is the cca rating on the battery, I know that mercury reccommend minimum cca rating of 800 amps for the optimax so maybe eteks have a similar requirement, owners manual should tell, m70z batteries as commonly used are only 760cca rated.
