A bit of a late report but after putting many hours in over the last year or i so i finally got what i had been chasing. A nice big jewie.
Got her on the last no moon in the richmond river using fresh squid from the co-op. She went 17kg and 1.1 metre in lenght. to say i am stoked would be an underestimate.
She gave me a good fight but then came in quite easily after wearing it out with a nice gaff shot from a gaff virgin. He didnt tell me that till he finally dragged it over the edge of the boat!!!!
Just tryin to figure how to get photo from email to here!!
Jewienewie
Nice one Jewienewie. That makes me more than a little jealous. fair wack bigger than mine from the same moon. Now i guess the challenge is to repeat it!
Yeah boys, very happy. Been chasing these buggers for a while with only a few small ones. But the night of the new moon, time tide etc from what i have learnt here was perfect. I lost two other earlier in the night. Both were very decent fish but they were hooked on a lighter outfit and i couldnt stop them before pulling hooks on one and snapped off on the other. Was elated to get this one in the boat.

Good one Jewienewie - you'll find that they come easier now. Just a tip - don't try and stop them when they do that first big run, just keep a steady pressure on them until they tire. They will then come in pretty easily and you won't get busted off nearly so often. The first run is very powerful and they'll bust most gear if you try to stop them, but they give up very quickly after that and often come in belly up. I once landed a jew that went 15kg on whiting gear using a yabby for bait simply by being patient until the fish gave up.

Well done on a top Jewie. Now the rest are easy. Like they say....dont try and stop them on their first run....rarely more than 50m, sometimes 100m....and if its going to empty your spool its probably not a jewie (or its a bloody big one).
