Thread: My rod was killed

    My rod was killed

I broke my little bass rod yesterday in such an unusual way.
I was flicking for flathead in the shallows when I did an overhead cast, the bail arm flipped shut half way through the cast, the jighead shot backwards like a bullet and with a little "click" went straight through the rod tip knocking about two inches off the top.
A perfect shot. I just stood there in silence. I looked at the rod tip, looked at the water, looked at a seagull, who looked back at me, looked at my boy, who just shrugged. I shook my head and went home.

As my wife so helpfully pointed out, I've got a heap of other rods just sitting there to choose from?!?! They just don't understand that it has to be the perfect rod. And barra baitcasters don't match up real well with little spin reels.
It was a good rod, not expensive, but it caught many fine fish.

I'm OK now. The tackle and tinnie show is just around the corner. So I'll be on the prowl for something nice.
Just wanted to share this with someone who understands....and cares. sniff

I feel your pain, Michael.......we all do.

Every good rod is like a faithful friend with whom we share a myriad of experiences and good times. To lose a good rod is akin to losing a good friend.

    RIP little bass rod......

    Re: My rod was killed

I did a similar thing while backpacking through Central America.

It was a 6 weight Sage fly rod that I usually chucked around crazy charlies and other small flies. When we got to Belize there were Tarpon in the 20-30lb range (small ones ) and I tied on a small surf candy which is one with a hardened epoxy head. While trying to punch out an extra big cast the expoy head took the top 4 inches off the rod .

Belize really isn't the place to buy, repair or do anything to a fly rod so I ended up using a paper clip, sewing thread and superglue to make the rod usable for the rest of the trip.

Shame about your rod LGM. But the minister of finance usually understands things like this a little better. So happy shopping

Mate just buy a new tip and glue it on. Losing two inches will have about a one percent difference.

Will they never learn? Mate, retaliate with something about some of her shoes, make the loss something she can relate to!
    My condolences on your loss.

    cheers

Will who never learn? Wives? Learn what, exactly?

Michael I'm sorry to hear about your rod, I broke the tip off a beloved spin stick last year and was in a funk for days.

As an aside, I have just bought my first multi-piece Nitro (www.innovatorrods.com) and the warranty says if you break any section they'll replace it for $60. Very reassuring to know!

Yeh mate, I planned on doing that, do you think I should just glue the new tip on where it broke ( very clean break )or take it back to the next guide...will it matter if the guides are too close together ?. I haven't told the wife that it's fixable yet. If I did it would mean no new rod for me...my names Billy not Silly.

Driving to work this morning she said to me " why don't you look for another bass rod at the tackle and tinnie show " Way ahead of you dear.
She's actually pretty good when it comes to my fishing gear. For Chrissy she got me the new T curve tournament bait caster, and a 4000 sized Sustain to go on my power spin.....she's a keeper this one.

You are an exception Nic. My wife does get me gear and doesn't mind me going fishing a lot, but sometimes she really just doesn't understand the whole fishing thing..
We spoke also this morning about heading back to Awoonga. She said " Chinchilla's closer...if we go out there instead we can see the relatives " WHAT THE ???? my head almost exploded !!!

I'll have a look at the Nitros......I've heard good things about them.

Ooops, present company excluded Nic of course.
Un-fortunatly for our combined bank balance, my passion for fishing is equally, if not more vigorously, matched by Debs obsession with shoes.
