Question got $1000 and want two units

ok, i know it has been asked a 100 times and i have read allot of the threads but i cant work out what i want.

i offer this debate for everyone

imagine if a mate of yours gave you $1000 and said buy me a gps unit and a sounder.
i want a sounder with good res like 640 and prefer colour. and i want a gps unit that works well and has what i need to go mostly to palm beach reef and the like on the eastern coast.

what would you come home with?

    all answers are much appreciated.

have a look at something like this
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing rods.

A good qaulity combo is the way to go rather than 2 units.

Re: got $1000 and want two units

i have just bought a 5.5m stejcraft and i will be slowly improving it, already bought new carpet and am building a new seat. have a mate that is a marine upholsterer so thats a bonus.
i can buy the units at seperate times so i might be able to stretch the budget a little.

if i buy a combo unit i was thinking of going with a hummingbird 737, but it is a gray scale. I will be using lures 90% of the time so i was under the impresion that colour was better for targeting specific fish at depths. is this true or does the gray work just as good.

i was also looking at the humminbird 787c2 but it was $1300 and i'll probably have to wait a couple of months to get it.

i like the sound of the northstar that was pointed out to me by russ81 but am a bit hesatent on the brand, any thoughts would be appreciated.

sooo, you want mapping software to to with that GPS, Sir? Or do you want to get to a known mark, or .......

I am a toy person so have a 737 with GPS, but not yet mapping software for my pointy punt. Hopefully it will earn it's keep at Lake Monduran, but up the local creeks it is overkill.

Mate who is a minimalist/anti toy person catches plenty offshoe with the bottom of the range Furuno black and white, and a hand held non mapping gps. And local knowledge and experience. Maybe he'd like a plotter that showed in detail the edge of the reef.....

I have been on boats where sounder has failed, or GPS has failed, but not both. (phew) That is an argument against combo units.

As for colour sounders, yes, have seen charter operators with big colour screens and local knowledge work magic
