Maroochydore Land based - any tips

    Hi

I will be staying at Maroochydore soon and was after any general locations I can try and what I should target.

I will be staying on the river near Bradman Avenue and may hire a kayak one day to fish the river and I may also try the surf beach. I will be predominantly land based in the river.

Would like to target bread and butter species like bream and whiting with bait but also a bit of SP fishing for flathead etc ( I can't seem to get bream on SP's)

Any general tips would be appreciated.

    Cheers

    Chris

Yep I caught a nice sand flatty at same spot north side of river mouth last time I was there. That was about it though!

Nice spot u going to mate! You will love it... well the fishing can be tough in the river at times. Send a PM to member "Nuggstar". He is the local Maroochy river legend on these forums and always seems to catch something when there appears to be nothing to catch!

True that... I've been fishing the Maroochy for years and can't catch shit usually but I can go down to the Mooloola and usually catch something decent!

Depressing, because I live only a few hundred meters from the river.

ok time for nuggs maroochy report hehehe. the river has been fishing ok this week for me. quite a few small flatty to 50cm at picnic point as well as whiting and bream, most are small there but there are some keepers. there have been good schools of solid whiting around the back of chambers island. trevally have been busting around the cod hole (moter way bridge) and some good jew to 5kg have been caught there to at night time off the bank, live herring has been working well there. lost of bream in cornmeal creek and a few baby jack about. jacks bream and trevs in twinwaters and lots of bream and the odd trev in maroochy cannals. flattys and whiting at bli bli. dont forget to hit the barra park (if thats ya cup of tee) as its going nuts in the arvos at the moment.

Some good shark fishing around the Cod Hole around the turn of tides if you like that sort of thing.
Bullys around 30-60kgs are plentiful, and great fun.

    Enjoy our little heaven!

And to think I go tubing there

How would I go about catching them Mac1952? I've always wanted to give it a go...

    Matt.

PS: I saw some trevs busting baitfish between Maroochy river cruises and the boat ramp this evening. One followed my TT switchblade but didn't have a swipe at it.

    Hi Matt,

I just float the biggest Mullet or part thereof I can cast, using a 13.5ft heavy surf rod.
No weight! You'll just get Rays if your bait hugs the bottom.
Ideally 1.5 hours either side of a turning tide, preferably at night. Cast upstream and let bait float down/up on the tide.
PM me and I might join you one evening.

    Have fun!

    Sounds like a plan

Were you cast netting for small mullet in the Canal next to picnic point one afternoon a week or two ago?
I was fishing down there with my daughter and struck up a brief conversation with a friendly chap about the sharks in the Maroochy.. Stature looked very much like your sig.

Not me , Matt. Don't tell me there's another goodlooking fellow out there.....

I don't rate your chances of Jewies as a bycatch, Nuggstar. Jewies will shy away from steel trace/leaders, and you will most likely (definitely?} not land a fair-sized Bully without some decent steel.
