Peter Faust Report 20/2/2009
I am posting this for a mate of mine from Airlie Beach. Toddy fishes Faust two to three times every week. I believe he is joining the site as soon as possible until then he asked me to post this.
Dam now at 83% is making thing a lot more difficult, and you have treat it like a whole new fishery. But the dam should stay around this level as sunwater are releasing water so the water doesn't go over the spill way and spread the weed.
It’s been very hard going at the moment, with the majority of fish being caught in the dam being around the 50-70cm average and the odd 1m fish.
Fish have been caught on the points and bays using x-raps, and soft plastics, casting towards the bank and a painfully slow retrieve. I have also heard of a couple of hot sessions using the Horny toads now that the frogs are on the move.
Good numbers of sooty’s have also been caught up in the small creeks and along the dam wall. Red claw are still being in caught in good numbers as well, and I thinks it is them that the Barra are feeding on so different plastics are working along the weed edges, that makes them a little harder to catch. Some fish were caught last week during the rain on fizzers and small Halco poppers.
If none of this is working, try what I did last week as a last resort, and troll through the timber and old creek beds with shallow 1-2m lures I was using laser pros so I could troll around 6-7kts, and have you drag done right up tight, cos they will brick you in the sticks before you know what has happened. But if they manage to beat you in there, take your pressure off them immediately as they will slow right down or even stop, near the closest tree, giving you a chance at getting them out. Within an hour I had landed a 103 and a 105 as you can see in the photos. It made me forget the five hours of casting before these two! Desperate times...
When heading to Faust drop into the Lindsay's on the main road. He is the only bloke locally who truly knows what is going on- no one knows Faust like Lindsay. If spending a few days spend a morning with him first he as he is sure to put you on the fish and teach you what is going on.
If anyone wants to contact Toddy let me know and I will send you his mobile. Or if you see the "nuns punt" on the water come over for chat.
