A mate of mine just sent me this. Not sure where he found it but it looks impressive. I can think of a few areas where I wouldn't mind one, especially if no-one else knew where it was .

I have seen a few designs along those lines. These sort of artis are FAD style structures and while they work well to attract existing fish to the spot but probably don't cotribute to total biomass as much as the proposed rubble/reefball module formats

Nice! a true Aussie bloke could knock one of them up in their back yard, wouldn't be popular with the green zealots or government departments as each one in place would greatly increase fishing amenity and that is simply just not on after all of their good work done already.

I'm sorry... but that is a crock.
look at the amount of marine growth and complete eco systems that grow from wrecks of steels ships.

The pacific islands are full of war time wrecks.

It doesn't matter what it is ends up in the ocean it wont be long before it is covered in marine growth and a whole eco system builds arround it.

I will aggree that some for of masonry would allow growth to attach more redily and quickly.

Yeh it would be expensive, and the size of the structure would be very expensive to install.

then you ask .. would that steel be better recycled.

The problem with this and any type of structure to be used for artificial reefs is not so much whether they work but where is a suitable place. (according to the research)
Around Moreton Bay especially the depth requirements just would not suit therefore limiting their use to bigger boats that can travel further.
It could be argued however that supplementing the close in reefs or extending them with smaller structures suitable to the existing terrain just might work.

The idea of these structures is to attract pelagic fish.They do have a small increase in biomass but they are large structures with minimal surface area for colonization of benthic organisms which are the cornerstone of stable productive ecosystems.
