Line for Deckwinch??

Hey guys ive just bought myself a new Alvey Reefqueen Deckwinch and ive noticed that Alvey recommend using their own brand mono line or it can risk damaging the winch and they will void the warranty. Im thinking this is something that youd ignore and use any brand of mono??

Im thinking about putting 150-200lb mono on it, or whats peoples thoughts on 200lb braid?? The braid is alot dearer of course but is it worth spending the extra??

Most deck winches require a bit of stretch seeing there is no give in braid they all recomend mono seeing the pressure on winding the fish off the bottom where you can fairly give it to them.

This bussiness about having to use genuine Alvey line doesnt seem right tho??

the problem with deck winches is that there is such a long length of line and the diameter of the spool gives that line an incredible advantage against the structure of the spool.

If you real all the alvey documentation you will notice thay recommend a low stretch line....in some of their documentation they specificaly recommend their own product.

you would problay be safe with platapus low stretch.


consider this.....you have a heap of line out..and you end up with something big one the end....if you are pusshing 80Lb mono to the limit you willthen have 80Lb of tension in every turn of line on the spool... multiply that by 3.14 and you have an idea of the diametric compression....240 lb of compression for every turn of the reel.

If there is no stretch in the line this isn't a problem, but if there is 20 ot 30% stretch the tension will be constsnt and will remain in the spool.

Low stretch line is the go....I have heard some people use 50lb pluss braid... I assume they are rich and wear gloves.

Another good reason to buy the alvey stuff is that it will be on big spools... how much 50Lb mono do you recon you will get on a reef queen?

I wold be surprised if it was less than 1km

I've got 200lb braid on mine but i'm more interested in using it for deep dropping so that's why i went that way! I can tell you the braid does work on reds though just use strong leader At least 200lb and strong hooks, swivels as these will be your failer points! I use 500lb swivels and 14/0 circles hooks i got from dave dawsons commercial fishing supplies in mooloolaba!

Alvey dont make line..they make reels. Australian Monofil (platypus) make line.....and bloody good line at that. They have been trade partners for many years. I have never seen a warranty on an alvey reel that implies that if you dont use 'their' line the warranty is void. I suggest you clarify that with the Alvey people.....both companies are absolutely committed to the australian market and the aussie fisho and i find this hard to believe. Both are Icons in the local industry.

We run 100 pound line from Australian Monofil company (not low stretch) on our deck winches and have done for years with no problems. The problem with the low stretch line is it has a memory and when you hook a fish and grab a couple of hand fulls of line to get it off the bottom the low stretch gets in tangles. A friend had some on his and has now changed over to our line. If you are worried about it once a year let it run out until it is near the bottom of the spool then wind it back on with little tension. Once you get a deck winch though you won't go back.

I was goint to venture as far as saying that the alvey branded deck winch line was platapus lo strech....But I do not know that for certain.

Alvey are probaly doing the wise thing and offering a complimentary product for their deck winches.....it makes it easy to get an appropriate line where there are only a few lines specified and marketed as low stretch and have the appropriate performance.

It also gives the retailer an easy brand for brand sale with a reliable result.

I would be most surprised if The Alvey family would get their nose out of joint if you did not use their brand of line.


BUT any way.....If you are seriously in doubt...go on the alvey web site and use the enquiry facility....... you will almost certainly get a repply from a family member probaly Glen Alvey....... straight from the horses mouth...... no Bull$%@T.

For that matter pick up the phone..... last time I rang Glen Alvey him self answered.

Just thinking about the 100Lb mono........in reality how often are you going to get enough strain in that line to get it into the stretching part of its charactistic.
You would have to be getting 60Lb odd befor it started to get significant stretch.....so in effect you are creating a low stretch situation by over specifying the line.


here is a reality check......do you recon you could winh up the average slim 5'4" lady on your deck winch on dry land... that is about 45Kg/ 100Lb.

I recon it would be more likley you'd be running 30 - 40 Lb of drag/ line tension.

at that standard 100Lb mono would be low stretch.......good quality stuff would be even better.

If it was loaded up with 50Lb that would be a different story.

have tried braid on both my queens and found it very hard to work with, i now run 150lb low streth mono on both my queens and am very impressed in how they perform, leaders vary from 200lb to 300lb depending on fish of the season, i run up to 3kg of lead and have no dramas

just get schneider deano, and be done!!!!!!!!! with all the husar and flathead you catch on the reef 30lb will do! seriously 150lb should do, 200lb is like whipper snipper cord

Cheers guys, I think ill give braid a miss for the depth ill be fishing. The reason I was thinking 200lb is coz a pro shop up the coast sells minimum 200lb but for dirt cheap prices. I was thinking 200 mainline with say 120-150lb leader. My mate an ex pro reckons you dont wana snag the bottom with much over 120lb or youll have to cut the line. Cant wait to load her up

i have spent a bit of time behind the winch and we run 80 pound braid
with about 120pound mono wind on leader ( quality stuff is the key)
and crimp all other joins. if you need a bit of strech just run a bit longer wind on leader but havent found any issues yet. Also run a lighter string of mono to the
weight in case of finding the bottom so it will always bust at the weak link.

Dean, i forgot to mention in that pm, dont bother spooling it right up, just put on what you need. With heavier lines its sometimes impossible to stop or bust the line on an unstoppable' especially when the spool is doing 100mph on full drag and the entire boat is shacking!. Its no use putting on several hundred meters of line you dont need. Just take extra line to respool with... foxy
