Question Can you register an Australian domain name without ABN?

The cook and I want to register an Australian domain name...you know...with the au on the end but it looks like an ABN is needed.
    Is this the rule??.
Any info or hints would be good.

Can you register an Australian domain name without ABN?
Nope you cannot. You must have an ABN to register a .com.au domain name.

Don't have to be yours though if you have a mate with one.

Re: Can you register an Australian domain name without ABN?

No, not anymore. As long as the domain is in relation to what you do, or is relative to your business name, and you have the business name registered (ARBN), or an ACN, or ABN, you can register it as a sole trader. No need to also have a ABN anymore.

See melbourneit.com.au if you want to register a domain.

If you don't have an ACN, ABN or ARBN and you want to register a domain you can get someoen that has an ACN, ABN or ARBN to register it for you. As long as the domain is in relation to what the domain is being used for then you are OK.

See ASIC to register an ARBN http://asic.gov.au

Let me know if you need somewhere to host it.

    Thanks fella's.
We were after a .com.au but it looks like you can only register a .id.au with no ABN.
Mod5...I'm shocked. Would you think I'd do something not entirely by the book??
Well somethings I might do a bit dodgy but with this??
So thanks fella's. We just have to wait for the ABN to come through.

You don't need an ABN, just and ARBN (Australian Registered Business Name). Just drop into Consumer Affairs in the city and you can register your business name in minutes. Then you can register your .com.au

You can also now sell your .au domain names. I have 8 up for sale. New rules came in june 2008 from memory to allow you to sell any .au after you have had it for 6 months.

I have an ABN if you need anything scott.

Re: Can you register an Australian domain name without ABN?

it was a surprise to me too steve, and i am glad i hung on to a few i had from a few years ago.

here is where it all seemed to have started and is being promoted more and more all the time now http://www.netfleet.com.au/

and it is completely free to sell. no fees at all. So i would list them there since it costs nothing to have them sit there.

here is a snipett of the rule change.

You cannot register a domain name for the sole purpose of resale or transfer to a third party.

You cannot transfer your domain name for the first six months after it is registered (this does not apply to domain names that have been renewed or previously transferred). You can apply to auDA for authorisation to transfer within the first six months in special circumstances.

After six months, you can offer your domain name for sale by any means.

The buyer must comply with normal eligibility and allocation rules for .au domain names.

Transfers will be processed by the registrar of record using a standard transfer form, and the registrar may charge a transfer fee.

Please visit the auDA website for more details. It is the responsibility of both the buyer and seller to become familiar with these regulations.
