Like the others said every setup has it's purposes.
I recently purchased a 5000 Stradic to go on a Wilson LCS Medium 10-20lb with 20lb finns braid for spinning and offshore plastics. Broke it in a week ago on a 5kg cod in 60m, handled it really well i thought and compared to the amount some people are willing to spend was reasonably cheap ($450 all up with rod, reel, braid and some good quality fluorocarbon leader)

As far as brand goes i prefer Daiwa. The ones i have all do the job they were bought for. As far as different models that depends on your budget on the job you want to do. I'll bite my tounge about my thoughts on Alveys, dont want too start a slanging match ;P

Daiwa is my pick. Certate is great but Sol is good if you're on a budget. Alvey for beach and rocks only. Shimano spend more on ads than reel development.

My favourites are Shimano baitcast reels as I have found them to be easy to use, well-made with a smooth action and reliable. They've performed well for me in a variety of conditions.

I also have a couple of other brands, including Daiwa. Even though I prefer the Shimano baitcast reels I generally use other names for other applications.
The reels worth mentioning that I have are:

Baitcast:
Shimano Calcutta 400
Shimano TE Conquest 300
Shimano Curado DSV300
Daiwa Blacksheep 300
Daiwa CV-Z 253 Millionnaire (not used yet)
Penn 965 International
TICA Gemini 300 (not used yet)

Spin:
Penn Slammer 560
Penn Spinfisher 6500
TICA SE 8000H


Now I just need to grow multiple arms or clone myself so I can use them all..!

Ultimately, my answer to the original thread question is I prefer Shimano (for baitcast - as that's what I've done mostly).

Shimano spend more on ads than reel development.

They spend more on tv personalities and sponsored fishos as well. Dollar for dollar Daiwa generally offer more but Shimano have some gun reels that Daiwa just cant match for certain styles. I cant find a Daiwa reel for spinnning for Tailor that matches a 5000 - 6000 Twinpower or Sustain. Pick what you are going to buy based on what you are targeting and how you want to target them, not based just on preference for a brand. Both Daiwa and Shimano produce great reels but we all end up paying for the marketing. By the way the marketing budget of both brands would be miles higher than their R & D, thats just the way it is with consumer products.

Apologies to all Shimano fans!! I just personally prefer my Daiwa gear to my grindy, overpriced, poor casting Shimano gear. That being said, I hear the Shimano baitcasters are better than Daiwa and I am sure the newer range of Shimano threadlines are far superior to the old ones.

Scott ....... I think you would find that a 4000 Certate would be more than a match for a 5000 Twin Power ( Keep in mind that most Daiwa spin reels equal the next size up in a Shimano ) - You would probably find that the 4000 Heartland XA would be fine as well......... & cheaper

As far as quality goes the Certate kills the Twinpower but at $250 more. I like the Twinpower because of the retrieve rate and spare spool. It pulls in about a metre plus per turn were as the Certate is only 85cm. If Daiwa had a high speed Certate 4000 i would be interested or even a Heartland etc, they just dont. I have a Daiwa Catalina 4500H ( spare spool cost $200 another reason i like the TP ) but want something lighter for a 9' - 10' rod. The Emblem pro is way too heavy for what i am looking for as well. Daiwa just dont cater for high gear ratios in lighter reels.
I do own a Certate 2500 and hope to have more down the track just not for metals.

For medium size reels for 'speed' spinning the Twin Power and Sustains 5.8:1 ratio comes in handy compared to the Certate 4.8:1 and Heartlands 4.9:1, but in the the bigger models for Macs and Tuna my Emblem Pro is the reel I go for, like Scott I believe in horses for coarses

Hi Scott ....... Its true that Daiwa spin reels traditionally have a lower retrieve ratio than Shimanos - & I guess that if you are into HSS ... you just cant have enough speed Fair comment

Well there is no real reason I asked this I just wanted to know what brand reels are the most popular.
Most of my fishing is in PPB for snapper and I use Shimano 6500 Baitrunner with a Shimano Catana 701 Snapper Rod.
I also enjoy fishing for whiting and use a Shimano Stella, I use a shimano calcutta and dams etc and that is abot all I have in reels at the moment. I look forward to hearing some more replies.
