Team - sounds like there are too many variables for me to sort it out on my own. I live near Rocky so I might drop in to the Dobinsons factory/ shop one day and have a chat with them.
Cheers.

Sounds like a good idea
Has anyone just thrown the coils away and installed the "real deal" air bags??
Not those poly bags you fit as well as the springs.

I thought full air systems were engineerable in qld???? Correct me if I'm wrong.
Red-nut I had a set of 2" lifted heavy rate dobinson's coils in my 80 series for about 150,000 kms. They were a great spring. That was about 8 years ago now though.
Good luck.
got to love the stiffs in high places hay.
i say where the people in the link came from. I wonder how many people are running around in QLD with bags thinking all was ok?
neil
I had a yarn to the happy chappies at Airbag Man this morning and they sell a full bag kit for the 80 series for about $1300 which is ADR approved and can be used in QLD legally.
The main hassle with transport guys seems to be the means in which air is put into the bags or the control system for the bags.
Control from the cab (like the wallymobile cars have...you know the ones with doof doof and the such) is not allowed but control through tyre valve type setups or air valve paddles under or outside or in the cargo area is allowable.
The transport guys are just trying to stop the minority of people who would want to use airbags as 'wank thing'
So there...from the horses mouth.
I reckon the price isn't bad either considering the price of a set or 2 of springs
Cheers Scott

its funny when they say "ADR Approved".
ADR is what a vehicle manufacturer needs to comply with when building a car from scratch.
Once you purchase a car if you wish to modify it you need to comply with the state legislation not the ADR.
So in this case there is no mod code in the light vehicle code of practice for suspension mods. There is in the heavy vehicle but it cant be used for light vehicles.
So in saying this the only other way to get them approved is to send an application into Queensland Transport and see if they will approve it. Just like you do with a body lift as this also has no mode code. Good luck with that.
All i can say is before you go out a spend big dollars on airbags check with Queensland Transport.
neil
P.S. Queensland Transport does not recognise a suspension lift by means of different springs a major mod so it doesn't require to go through the red tape.
True there is no mod code for light vehicles but if you submit Queensland Transport form 1854 stating your case and the mod requested plus details (which would be easily obtained from Airbag Man) they will look at each case on merit.
The boys consult with, in this case Toyota, to see if the mod would make the vehicle unsafe and then make a decision.
They are trying to stop the wally's with bag systems that drop the car onto the ground but in the case of a 80 series cruiser wanting to put full bag system on the back for towing would not be much of a problem seeing the owner actually owns a boat and is getting the system through a well know outlet.
But you never know until you've got the approval in your hot little hand.
Rules...they're everywhere and the real sad bit is they're made to try to control 2% of the population but adversely affect 98% trying to do the right thing with the initial 2% not taking any notice of the laws anyways

Im in the 2 percent
I'm not but a person can fantasise
So true finga but as far as I'm aware no one has been approved for air bags.
So the outcome looks grim.

depending on the boats ball weight, you may need a weight distribution hitch or level ride bars, They are much better for lifting the vehicles rear end and are legal and are widely used with caravans. Look at the Hayman Reece web site.
