    UHF Radios

    Hi Guys

Just looking at putting a UHF in the cruiser and was wanting some advice on what a good option would be for both the radio and aerial? Am looking at doing a trip to the Cape next year but in the meantime will be doing a couple of trips out west. Not looking to spend a fortune but want to get something with a decent range and which i can rely on.

    Cheers

Whatever you decide to buy make sure the squelch is very easy to operate on the fly, the bloody icom that I own is the biggest piece of fertiliser because of this, but apart from this complaint it's a top shelf unit

I cannot stress enough the need for the ability to easily change squelch settings. What where they thinking!!

I have a uniden (I think) with police scanner.

Make sure you get the police scanner. It is great.

I will find out what model I have.

Cost around $450 off ebay new. Aerial cost about $80.

    Good luck

Mine's the remote face type as well.
It's Uniden, also has cop scanner (as Mark's does), and does everything I need it to do!
TJM sell them for around the $400 mark, and the aerial for around $90!

Check out Andrews Communication website . (just google it up ) They have a great range and were the cheapest I could find .
Mine is a GME 3220 and was a $100 cheaper than prices on the Gold Coast .

    Re: UHF Radios

Icom - can tweak the old one, but cant tweak the one with all buttons in the Mic. I have the one with all the buttons in the Mic...Icom are the Rolls of UHF, but you pay a price for it. Then Uniden and GME in my book.

    Re: UHF Radios

Does the new 400 pro have a simple up and down squelch control on the mic? or anywhere else for that matter, my 400 pro is a right pain to use.

Ok just googled it's the 440 that has the special mic.

I have a Uniden UH013 which works well. Is the "Wide Band Scanning" function what you guys refer to as the police scanner??? I haven't played with that much yet. What are the legalities with that?

My UHF doesn't have a fully manual squelch adjustment. There are only 2 preset squelch levels available, but I've never ever had a problem with the squelch.

I haven't had much experience with UHFs apart from mine, but I would recommend a UH013.

    Hope that helps.

    Re: UHF Radios

I have the Uniden UH013 as does the lobster.

Cant fault it in any way.

The remote face is a corker and it is easy enough to fit a small speaker (costs no more than $20) and fit it to your console. They get a bit muffled when they are fitted under your steering column without the speaker.

    Good luck

you can bump them up to 20watts I thing (not legal) its a computer hook up to do it. It requires a special cable and the Icom software and away you go.......

not good in town for every one else but out in the bush they are great

    cheers Murf
