How about this?

Make the lead slug. Give a thin coat of epoxy or similar glue. Wrap in Clingwrap. Spray with silver mirror and then some blue paint (from B*****gs and Supercheap).

The silver is $18 a can but should do lots of slugs.

When the slug hits the rocks, the cling wrap will "pit" but remain intact. The paint should stay stuck to it.

When the lure gets too battered put on more glue and another layer of cling wrap and paint.

Thanks again for all the positive comments guys, Good luck with your own Scott i have tried all sorts of paints (gold,silver,chrome) i even tried just buffing the lead slugs with a wire buff and coating with epoxy but they just dont have the sparkle that i get from the glitter, and they went a bit dull and yellow. You should have a go at it Neil the smaller Kiwi bait fish moulds have the three sizes in one mould and i think they cost about $55 bucks. Yes Wags they are the same moulds that Phill used to make his Mackmauler slugs I also got some from him a few seasons back and the spotties love em ! Just need them to turn up ! Maybe JB is getting them all down the Goldie, might have to slip him a few for some info !

I am going to pour some more now Ray has got me all excited again. I will try a few finishing methods and see how they go. I will drop some over to you to have a play with as well. Just have to make up a couple of more moulds.

Thanks again for the info Ray. I have buffed mine on a wire brush as well but it just seems to easy to get real satifaction from if that makes sense.

If the rod building epoxy is getting a bit expensive, have a look at one of the marine epoxies such as west system, boat coat or system 3.

Unfilled they are thin runny clear and pretty damn hard wearing.

In volume they are much cheaper than buying retail packed eopxies.... but you do have to cough up for at least half a litre.....and you do need to measure very accurately.

I use suringes.....the best place to buy these is from a first aid wholesaler.....I get 10mm bare suringes for about 35 cents each.

First pair of suringes I baught cost me $5 in a bag with the adhesive manufacturers name on it. .

If you smeared the epoxy on hard and thin and then applied the glitter you would probaly get better bond strength on your top coat.

I agree you do need to apply a backing colour.

What you are doing is similar to some of the processes that the custom pen turners do.

some of the holographic foils may be worth looking at too.

G'day folks!

My idea about the cling wrap were to provide a surface that the paint could bond to that might "pit"when it hit a rock but would not chip. I reckon that any epoxy or varnish that underlies the paint will flake of when contacting rocks.

I've recently joined Deepfried throwing metals from the rocks for tailor. We both use braid with a short leader and, as a consequence, have to get the slugs out of the water and onto the rocks in a hurry when they approach dry land. The hard knocks on the rocks are taking the paint off Gillies and similar lures.

They do look familiar ray.....

I put my trebles on the FAT end of the slug to stop it turning over and catching the line when casting. It also allows the slug to have ' action' by the meer fact that the Fat end is bulkier than the pointy end.
