That time of the year should be tailor, dart, bream and whiting. Plus most likely the odd shovelnose thrown in on the surf beaches.

We stayed in a house at happy valley (few years ago now), it was close to gutters for the mentioned fish, easy to get to them at any tide and worms and pipis were also close. A 10 minute run north or so and you were at the Maheno(spelling??). There were a couple of good gutters around it at the time holding tailor.

Camping I have no idea about. But one lot was just camped in the dunes behind a good gutter. For three days they had great times in the morning and arvo catching good 1.5 - 3 kg tailors.

    Cheers

    Hi Craig,

I'll also be on Fraser mid-year but not until late July. This time I'll be staying at Eurong with the kids and she-who-must-be-obeyed.

I've been to Fraser three times before, all camping trips. There are plenty of places to choose from most of the way along the eastern coast. We'd often camp at two or three different locations over the course of a week.

Just take your time driving along & suss out the conditions. Try & get a good possy that's a bit private & protected, perferably near a fresh water stream of some kind & not too far from a noticeable gutter.

You can get slab pillies from the local store on Fraser in the settlement area. I had a small fridge plugged into the cigarette lighter which made a big difference to how long the bait lasted.

But don't leave your cornflakes out when you go fishing or else the dingos will fleece the place. I've seen a couple of campsites completely ransacked by them.
So keep your grittles (& most things else) locked up tight.

One night I was cleaning some tailor by moonlight next to a small stream & I got the heebie-geebie feeling. I turned around and there were half a dozen dingos skulking directly behind me about 2 metres back.

I chucked a few tailor carcasses as far as I could towards the surf then finished cleaning the rest with newly developed eyes in the back of my head. Needless to say, I kept a good grip on my knife as the dingos kept coming back for more off-cuts.

You can't trust those dingos, and I was so glad to finally make it back up to the camp that night for a cold frothy chop and some fresh sizzled tailor fillets.
"...a voice in my head keeps telling me to go fishing..."
