Rudd Govt recreational fishing Advisory committee

Rudd Government investing in future of recreational fishing
The Rudd Government is delivering on its election commitment to establish a new recreational fishing strategy, as part of a $2 million initiative to support the industry.
Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke has announced the nine members of an advisory committee established to help develop the strategy.
The members of the Recreational Fishing Industry Development Strategy Advisory Committee are:
Ann Garard - has been involved in consultation with recreational fishers since the mid 1990s. As a charter operator she served on the NSW Charter Boat Operators Assn, including several years as President. She is an active member of Tourism Kiama.
Doug Joyner - broadly skilled in the industry and has been with the Australian Fishing Trade Association for nine years. He is involved with NSW and Victorian recreational fishing government forums and is a founding sitting member of Recfishing Research.
David Kramer - has extensive experience in policy development in the recreational fishing sector including with the Futurefish Foundation and Fisheries Victoria.
Phil Laycock - has worked in the Marine Tourism Industry in the areas of Interpretive Biology, Environmental Monitoring and Research. He is currently employed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Parks Authority.
Len Olyott - a fisheries scientist and CEO of Recfish Australia.
Michael Sawyer - completed the Recfishwest Young Future Leaders Course. He then participated in the National Seafood Industry Leadership Program and is passionate about recreational fishing.
William Sawynok - has been involved in the development of many programs within the recreational fishing sector. He is a former director of the Fitzroy Basin Association and former chair of the Central Queensland Regional Assessment Panel for the Natural Heritage Trust.
Lisa Sharp - regular recreational fisher and one of the next generation of leaders in the recreational fishing industry. She is a school teacher, fishing journalist and clinic instructor for Recfishwest.
Ross Winstanley – a recreational diver/spear fisher and marine and freshwater angler with 33 years’ experience in research, management and policy with fisheries agencies in Victoria and Tasmania

Mr Burke announced in October 2008 that former Northern Territory fisheries minister Chris Natt would chair the committee.

Committee members will also work with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation on leadership training and education campaigns for the recreational fishing industry.

“The Rudd Government recognises the importance of the recreational fishing industry to regional economies, with around one in five Australians fishing at least once a year,” Mr Burke said.

its good to see atleast that the reps are mainly from the recfishing industry. The only worying sounding candidate in that list is Phil Laycock, the bloke from the GBRMPA, hopefully the others crush his spirit soon.

Scott my thoughts exactly, it's good that something has been set up but this could go pearshaped if they have similar ideals to the EPA in some area's. 2million is a pittifull amount and a bandaid solution. Considering what fishing is worth in this country and what could potentially be worth 2 million is pocket change.

Nice try Kevin is that 2 mill just going in wages for these folks so you can say you had transparency when a labour gov't somewhere in australia rolls out another bunch of screwings to rec fishers????????

I'm very suspicious of this. Anything a Labour gov't does towards rec fishing in this country wether it be Federal or state based needs to be looked at with extreme skeptisism IMHO

    Cheers

In relation to RFAC, the Hon. Minister Burke MP, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry has determined that the fee paid to members of RFAC shall be $366 per day.

IMHO that’s not a high rate at all. Its usually only for days in meetings and not in preparation,

No, that's low. I remember being paid $52 an hour to teach at the Uni of South Australia in 1994-5, and people used to whinge about what we made. Add in all the marking and preparation, it was about $10 an hour...

Hence only 2 years of it...

    Cheers,

I believe a reasonable size chunk of this money will go toward a project or projects determined to be desireable by this body. I hope it actually does make a difference.
Still think it needs more Queenslanders on it.

Queensland Fisheries provide free sandwiches and coffee for those attending the Rocky Reef Fin Fishery but I had to pay the train fare to attend the meetings in Brisbane. Looks like the Federal Govt has more money to splash around.

    Coffee and sandwedges .

I think it is fair to say the the quality of the catering is an indicator of how much the opinion of those at the meeting is valued.

The state government can turn on a very serious bun fight when they want to and they slash taxi vouchers arround pretty freely when they want to too.

If our representatives wern't so dedicated and persistant we wouldnt get heard at all.

    thanks Barry.

Lets hope the feds actulay are interested.

    cheers
Its the details, those little details, that make the difference.
