    Patrol GU 4.5L

    Hey guys,

Looks like i'll finally be offloading my Adventra this weekend. So ive been out looking at real 4WD's this week.

Im pretty keen on a 2001 GU II ST 4.5L Petrol, at a nearby caryard.

Not that is a great concern, but im interested in fuel consumption if anyone knows. Im aware it would be a thirsty vehicle, but surely it couldnt be worse then my 5.7L V8 Adventra, could it ?

Also is there anything else I should know about these vehicles, or specific things I should look for when having a better inspecting of the vehicle. I had a quick look over it late today and took it for a drive. It's in top knick for an 8 year old vehicle and drives very well. It's done 141 000 klms. Vehicle is stock standard.

These vehicles are also a 7 seater. Can the rear 2 seats be fully removed, rather then just folded up to the side. I only have one child, so would never need or use the extra seats, and they just take up space.

Any info would be great, thanks in advance.

    G'day,

Very low KM for a 2001 model. Check provenance (i.e. ignore the owner's handbook servicing records and ask to see the invoices).

Under used is not always good. Dry seals, lumpy tyres, and when you subject it constant running it all falls to bits. Lots of small repairs if you're lucky but big ones if you didn't notice the rear main fail or the water pump become a fountain.

Fuel consumption: Expect 17lt/100Km and multiply that by three in off-road conditions. Seriously thirsty and much worse than the Adventra.

Recommendations: (1) It's diesel or nothing! (2) Keep the Adventra and drive it like there's an egg shell under the accelerator and you will be punished if you break it!

I think they are the closest you can get to a longterm investment in a 4wd that actually does things.

Towing 2.5 tonnes with that car I have seen just shy of 2km/L on the on-board computer, common was 4-5km/L I totally forget now the non towing figures as the fuel was free.

On average the engine is near bullet proof as is the drive train right down to the CVs and freewheeling hubs, the treatment we needed to dish out to the government ones could only be bettered by someone using it for comps and they never once missed a beat.

The only true problem area to equal any other brand out there is a soft 5th gear (it doesn't even need to be tow vehicle), everything else problem wise - there really is none when if comparing it to all others.

Check the gearbox history to see if it was fixed, as the fix was a fix if done correctly. The standard clutches are OK but sometimes are prone to excessive wear, we have multiple times on the same vehicle had all 4 wheels airlocked and spinning on the spot for near 5 minutes straight while winching up on firm ground the car and boat/trailer at bush launch sites, clutch never died.

Oh yeah the rear seats can be removed but only if ever called to justify the removal you state that it is/was temporary and will be refitted at your earliest convenience, they will need to be fitted for roadworthy. To remove them permanently the law requires you to get a mod plate stating the new decreased seating capacity...go figure

Agree with fnq - tough reliable thing that would be so much cheaper than a diesel to buy it won't be funny.
They take kindly to gas and then give respectable figures.

A mate has the auto and 4wding on Moreton he got 20l/100km on petrol - not too bad.

Don't expect anything better than 18-19 though - but for that you get smooth running and plenty of grunt.

Keep it serviced and it'll last forever.

Only an ignorant query - the 4.2 diesel isn't an option? I wouldn't be going the 3.0, even though I had one and it was good...

Hi Summertrance.Don't know if this helps but i had a GQ 4.2 petrol and it was the best vehicle i ever owned without a doubt. These Nissan engines take very kindly to gas so maybe that is an option when looking.I too whenever anybody asks me tell them in a word " bulletproof ".

Yep best landcruiser recovery kit ever made !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Problem is I need an automatic, and I dont think they make the 4.2 TD in auto ? Not sure i'd want a 3.0 TD in auto, and the few ive seen have like 250-300 000 klms. I am used to large fuel bills so I think the 4.5 Petrol is the go.

Thanks for the advice guys. Do the auto transmissions have any faults ?

The 4.5's lend themselves very nicely to a LPG conversion.

The only auto I've had any experience with is my mate's - he's had no issues with it but keeps it well maintained.

The autos are tough, the blokes who do not have a sky is the limit competition budget do use them happily I understand....still sooner or later all autos cost a bomb!

The 4.2 is a slug, now that diesel has reversed it's position with petrol as the dearest day in day out the life of the vehicle equation changes somewhat. The 4.5s power is effortless, runs multiple rings around the 4.2 or 3.0 on the sand or when towing, plan in the future to go gas and you will never look back IMO.

    cheers fnq
