Justin - M/bah river is always a hotspot but space is limited in a boat when they are on. I dont how it will go now with the new beach there but that little bay outside the channel markers is the area to target.

North Pine Dam is full of them all year round.

Justin, like Greg said M'ba is the spot to be when they are on (from may-august). Our club sends out plenty of emails when the billfish(garfish included) are about, so all members are kept in the loop of whats happening. If you decide to join up it might be $90 bucks well spent just to get those emails.

Best bait is tiny bits of prawns.

As Tunaticer said there are plenty of snub nose gar in North Pine Dam. Berley them up with small pieces of bread. The easiest bait to use is some dough squeezed onto the hook - costs nothing and is much quicker to use than prawn pieces.
If you want some river gar the place to go is the Bribie passage. Get up on top of the banks as the tide rises and berley with bread, bran or chicken pellets and you'll soon draw a crowd of them. I even got one last week on a yabby when I was chasing whiting, but if you rig for them you'll get heaps.
Another good spot if you want big ones for trolling baits is close to the shoreline at Mud Island. Some of the ones you get there are huge.

Well yes there are a lot of gar at north pine dam but compared to the sea gar you can get in moreton bay they are tiny and not really good for trolling baits. A good place in moreton bay without much travel is sometimes at the gravel pit on the north side of coochiemudlo island but if you dont mind the travel you can get some really big ones in days gutter at the southern end of moreton island.

Agree that sometimes you will get some small ones but often the quality can be pretty good. The smaller ones are a good size for tailor baits but you'll get plenty big enough to troll

We have tried the freshwater gar, as a back up they just get by, But go soft quick and dont swim, skip or look nearly as nice as the 3x2 (sea gar). If you can find the 3x2's in summer let me know. We catch enough in winter to last us the season but it would be nice to get fresh ones!
