    Hilux towing capacity

Wishing to find out if anyone has had any experience with towing 2200kg with a 3lt diesel hilux 4wd. I'm researching new glass and plate boats though don't want to find out later that i'll need a new vechile. My 05 hilux has been good to me but is yet to tow above 1200kg or put a 6m boat in the water. Also maybe opening up a massive can of worms here though would be interested in peoples opinions on Haines hunters as opposed to seafarers for a strong safe reliable ocean going fishining boat.

    Re: Hilux towing capacity

A mate drives a Hilux 3,0 D, and he absolutely struggles with a 6,0m Yaltacraft, which is in the same weight range you mention. Might be a dud, but he bought it new. A 2,8 DT Rodeo tows the same boat better.

    Re: Hilux towing capacity

Being a 2005 diesel hilux I will assume it is a turbo diesel. That being the case you shouldnt have any real problems.
I have a 2000 3litre diesel hilux with an aftermarket turbo fitted and it easily tows my 5.7m Cruise craft,to get up the boat ramp I use low range.
A good mate just sold his 19.5 ft haines signature and he towed it everywhere with a 3L td triton so engine size shouldnt be a problem.

I have a 05 hilux diesel and tow a 6meter polycraft 2000kg loaded on the trailer and have no troubles at all pulling that, sits easy on 100ks per hour

    Re: Hilux towing capacity

a greater issue (IMO) over performance is the tow rating, what is the vehicle rated to?

    Re: Hilux towing capacity

    Yep
Look at what the towbar is rated at and instruction manuall.
Could find yourself in trouble with the law if you exceed..
    Ratings are determined by manufacturer

    Re: Hilux towing capacity

also important to remember that the maximum towing capacity of a vehicle is the LOWEST rating of either the towbar or the vehicle, as an example, all 80 series cruisers prior to late 96/97 were rated to 2500kg yet if you buy a new towbar for one today the towbar is rated to 3500kgs (as all 80 series after 97 were rated to 3500kgs) so a 2500kg rated 80 series with a 3500kg rated towbar is only rated to 2500kgs and if a 60K boat is lying upside down in a ditch the insurance comapny will check, so importantly, make sure the legals are right before worrying about performance

I Will check the tow bars rating though the they say the Vechile can tow 2250kg I'd be reluctant to unless a get a vote of confidence . Thanks Clee
