A lazy Monday arvo on Cabbage Tree Ck

I had been getting bugged all weekend by my young bloke to go for a fish over the long weekend but we had a few things on which really limited the time available to us. Eventually after an OZ day family BBQ at my mum's place we finally got away and grabbed a couple of rods and picked up some smelly stuff from the little bait place at Deagon. Couldn't get the smelly stuff of choice (live worms) so I grabbed a pack of frozen prawns and some whitebait in the hope of snagging some bream or flatties for the young fella.

Arrived down at CTC aboout 3.30ish and made our way down to the green beacon which was only about 10ft off the low water mark. Baited up the young fella with a prawn and chucked a whitebait out on a set rod for a flatty. Ethan's bait was continually getting picked off by smaller fish so I tied on a smaller hook and showed him how to peel a prawn and use it as a softer bait to turn the picks into bites. First cast with the peeled prawn resulted in a nice whiting of about 24cm. The boy was impressed with dad's new trick and soon a steady stream of undersized bream and whiting started to filter through. The whitebait had been suffering the same fate as the prawns and being picked to pieces by the small bream within seconds of it hitting the water.

As the tide changed the bites just stopped instantly and my whitebait got a solid stike only to be completely bitten off. Re-rig and send another bait out for the same result, but this time taking the 40cm trace also. Most likely the little bull sharks that can easily be picked up in this area but today I was not prepared for them.

It was a bit worrying actually because the amount of people swimming in the creek down there yesterday was staggering, and conditions were not ideal with dirty water from recent runoff and the the bottom of the tide, overcast low light conditions close to sunset. All the conditions that the experts advise to avoid if you don't want to be tasted by a bull shark.

Anyway the whiting was the only decent fish caught for the arvo and we kept him in a bucket with regular changes to the water for an hour or so before conceeding that we weren't going to catch anything else and releasing him before heading off.
