How to best use pencil style lure
Hi
I have bought a lucky craft pencil surface lure about 50mm long, for Bream,Jacks and whatever else.
When I use it I am unsure of the action to use.
So far I have just been flciking it like a popper with little line jerks here and there.
But it doesnt seem to stay on the surface all the time especially when I have a lot of line out.
It somtimes flicks just below the surface.
Anyone got any tips on how to get the best out of this sort of lure.
Also how can you acheive the walk the dog style action when your land based ?
I seen one guy do it but he held his rod directly downward while standing on the high point of a boat which of course I cannot do standing on the bank.
I dont have a baitcaster either .
I dont know why the tackle store guy would recommend this lure to me since I have a spin outfit with braid, while I see most recommend BC outfit with heavy mono?
can I still use it on a spin setup with a mono leader or somthing?
cheers

you can still use a spin rod and reel, some thing in the 2500 range, yes you would need a mono leader, it is best to subtley twith the lure with the rod tip close to the ground or water, like using a plastic for bream, filck flick pause....... flick pause......... flick flick flick....... etc.

Spin or B/C makes no diffrence at all.
I am going to assume your using a fluro carbon leader??
Fluro carbon sinks slowly but it does sink so thats part of the reason your lure is going under the water. Try using a mono leader instead as it will float or you can buy floating leader. THe other option is to smear your leader in vaso or similar to help keep it floating. Will need to be re-applyed every so ofen.
Best way to describe the "walk the dog" action is you need to wack the slack....
You need a constant steady retrive and as you retrive you simply move the rod towards the lure slightly and wack back gently (wack the slack) This will than cause the lure to twitch giving the walk the dog action. You will need your rod as close to the water as possible and it is very easily acheived land based. You simply need to use more rod angle to get the rod closer towards the water line.
Every lure is slightly difffrent so some will need to be retrived faster than others. Play with your retrive speed and the ammount of wack and the speed of the wack untill you get the desired action from the lure.
It does take some getting use to but in know time you will do it without even thinking about it.

Re: How to best use pencil style lure
Mate,i used sticks this morning and raised 20 bass. Iv only recently started using them, but i got some goood advice and now i cast, let the lure sit, have a drink of my coffee.Give it a little shake?? not trying to walk itjust bob it up and down.Waittttt.then i give it a few walks.wait......then walk it back to the boat. I use both spin and b/c gear.Unfortunately my hookup rate was diabolical.Just means i have to go back and practice some more
