Red face Late Proserpine River Report New Years

A few families headed north to visit the Madman for Christmas last year and Conway Beach was the destination.

To say the least it was bloody hot. It would have averaged 35 degrees and the camp ground pool was so small it looked like a scene out of the Simpsons when they first got their pool.

Our first mistake was dropping the pot about 12 km upstream of the boat ramp therefore wiping about 4 hours a day from family outings checking the bloddy things. The rewards are definitely there though.

Due to the pots and the visitors fishing was pretty much out but we saw some big fish getting around and the neighbour got out to the inshore reefs and always came back with a good feed each day and enough for me to rebait the pots.

All in all a good trip and it will definitely be done again but not in the middle of summer and maybe in an A/C cabin.

The Prossie River has some great snags to fish and is not a difficult river to navigate. The major problem is getting the boat in and out at low tide on the ramp. At low tide a 4WD is advantageous,

    Till next time

    G'Day Madman.

I'm heading to the Proserpine River in about 2 weeks. Do you mind if I pick your brains a bit about the river as I have never been there before.
So the boat ramp at low tide is tricky. Is it one to avoid at low tide, or just a bit painful. I do drive a 4by4.Is there more than one ramp?
Any area better to look for live bait? Any areas you think should be avoided in the river?
How are the crocs on the pots? Do you loose a few?
Any other tips you have would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

    Mick

    Hey Nico,

I'm from Brighton and have some good Sand Crab spots if you are interested!!!

    Mick,

If you have a decent sized boat dont bother with the wilson ramp as it is pretty much a beach ramp.

The main Prossie ramp is a ripper although very narrow and long and one lane. Dont bother at the bottom of the tide as there is a sharp drop off. (did it once and never again). The river is nagigable at low tide and is recommended to explore at at low tode.

Do it once and you will be very comfortable at full throtle. There is plenty of deep holes up to 12 metres. Drop into Tackle World Mackay and Clint has a mud mad that is very helpful.

Crocs are a problem and will poke their heads into your pots and rip the crabs and bait pit. We lost a few.

The further you go up the river the better the crabs you get. Only use fish frames (not chicken frames) as we discovered. If there are a few pots around, zip tie your pots for piece of mind.

We will definitely be back in the cooler months.

Any further Q's drop a line

    Cheers

    Mark
