    Ningi Creek 21/01/09

    My first fishing report....

Put the yak in around 5.45am to catch the end of the run in and play on the shallow banks at high tide.
Had visited the same area yesterday and scored 5 flatties all around the 50cm mark and missed a larger model that went nuts.
    So I had high hopes.

Trolled for a while with no luck.
Cast for a while with no luck.
Changed lures every now and again with no luck.

Then as I was retrieving my lure and thinking I might call it a day, I saw the wake of a large fish heading towards my lure.
Paused, flicked, paused, he hit it and turned for home straight away!
I struck once he had turned and he went nuts, so I'm thinking it was the same big one I missed yesterday.
I thought I was going to be ok, drag was working fine etc.
Then this bugger came out of the water like a barra, shook his head like Angus Young and spat the bloody lure!
Now I have caught a lot of flatties in my time, but never have a seen such an angry one!
So I now have a nemesis and it is a flathead.
    I must catch him...

This was in about 2ft of water, so that is why you could see the wake etc.
I then dropped two smaller ones near the boat on the way back in.

Not the greatest day, but one I will not forget.

    Cheers and thanks.

Nice work - at least your catching flathead - I'd love to catch more of those sneakie buggers. Darren.

    Thanks guys.

Darren, my weapon of choice for the past six months has been the Ecogear SX48F.
There is a black and gold one and a couple of great natural coloured versions.
The gold in particular has been cleaning them up. Trolling or casting they are great.
Get a tackleback though, it hurts when you loose them!

I put 99% of the fish back, so they are still there.
Run out tides seem to be the best time around Ningi and Coochin.

    Hope this helps you.

    Cheers and thanks.

Bad luck on the lose on your new nemses.
Have you tried useing plastics to stop them from spitting the lure?
No once have a had a flattie spit a plastic once hooked. Just have them destroy the light leagers once used.

I think your right about the run out tides in the creeks in the passage chasing the flatties.

HD, I use plastics a lot in the boat.
But for some reason I have always used HBs when in the yak.
I think it comes down to the amount of gear.
I just take a small tackle box with 5 lures in it and that is all.
I might have to get another and fill it with plastics.
HBs are addictive though, I often have to stop myself buying them.
I have lost my job also, so that will slow me down!

You are right though, I think the larger hook could be the way to snare this flat lady.
I will give it a go and report back.

I love the squidgy fish in grasshopper for the flatties.
    Do you have a fav?
    Cheers and thanks.

    I have a couple favs.
My go to is 3" pumpkinseed grub tail minnow. But my larger flattie killer is 3" pogy in a colour that looks like a mullet. All in the gulp.

    Cheers Craig.
I thought he was one of your Coochin Bullies for a minute!
By the way I have also seen two bullies jumping totally out of the water lately.
One in the passage in the middle of the day and one at Beachmere/Caboolture river mouth at day break.
Both about 1m long and coming out of the water like a great white hitting a seal.
    Never seen that before either.

No, I have not been on the good gear....
    Cheers and thanks.
