i have heard of Shimano Torium reels having failures with their anti reverse mechanisms.
just wondering if anyone out there has had this happen?

Yeh Reggy, had problems after about 3 years of use. Replaced the anti-reverse bearing and all is fine. They also have a anti-reverse pall whic had a chip in the end as well, so I replaced it while I was at it.
Landed some great fish in that 3 year period and reelly gave it a work out. So I expected it to need some replacement parts after what it had been through.
Other than that its a great reel, nice and light, good retreive ratio, good drag, and a pleasure to use.
Cheers
had heaps of problems with mine and four of my mates have them, all but one have had the same problem. i've lost some good fish on them. spose if you keep the drag at 5kg you shouldn't have a problem. In my experience with toriums is that they aren't as strong as the daiwa saltist.Ask your local tackle store coz I have spoken to a few and they have more and more coming back. I think people put heavey braids on them and they are not designed for that.
I also have up graded the drag washers (Erskines) but only because the originals where had it. Otyherwise the drag has been sweet.
I to would say I have pushed it to the limit on reefies and sharks of various sizes, but I do only use 30lb nylon or braid on this reel.
I can't comment BogBosson the comparison between the Saltist and the Torim as I picked up a Saltist a while back and found that if I disengaged the clutch and wound the handle it would take about 1/2 a turn of the handle for the gears to mesh when I re-engaged the clutch and it made some nasty metal growling sounds while this happened. This may have been an anomally with that reel.
A mate of mine bought one recently so hopefully I will be able to have a play with that when he's not looking.
I agree with you Reggy one of my favourite reels.
Cheers
