    Hervey Bay Reef Action

    G'Day Ausfishers.

Back from 10 days in Hervey Bay with Old Man.

    Fished 3 days.

Day 1: Up at 3.30 and on water before first light. Tally: 10 coral bream to 38cm, 2 blueys (average size), 1 coral trout (50cm)(pic attached), 1 cod, 1 golden trev (attached and released). Left them biting at 8.30am. Coral trout tasted pretty good.

Day 2: Bit slow out of the cot. On water at 4.45. Tally: second golden (pic attached and also released), shark for southern neighbour, makeral, blackall. Three huge bustoffs on 60lb leader on reef. You get about 3 seconds before they get back to their bolthole. Unstoppable.

Day3: Windy. Hit the pier and caught 20 squid by 7am.

Most fish caught on fresh pencil squid caught by Old Man off pier. That stuff is dynamite. All fish caught close to shore and didn't fish past 8.30am. Didn't wet a plastic. Will be giving lessons to Old Man on camera technique.

Didn't weigh or measure the goldens - tried to get them back in the drink quickly. I suppose they might have gone 6 or 7 kilos. They pulled like trains.

It's going to be hard to go back to Donnybrook after that effort...

    Cheers
    Stephen

You're making me want to go up there for another week. Last year I took my boat up for a week and spent most of it sitting in the cabin watching the cricket while the wind and rain howled outside. I couldn't be that unlucky two years in a row - could I?

Thanks for the comments. I have been going up there for years. The fishing can be hot and cold and the wind can blow for weeks. When you get a small window you have to take it. Ironically, I think the wind is what helps keep the fishing good - stops people getting out.

Mate i live in hervey bay - Anything with some East in it and you can sneak anywhere up the island - if the wind is less than 15knots heading out to Gutters is fine!

fishing is very hit and miss sometimes...but usually come home with a feed!

Silent - Day 1 (hot bite) was a light/mod sou easter. Days 2 and 3 were NE. Reefs (in my experience) tend to fish better in the SE. NE isn't too bad but if it gets up a bit the fish seem to shut down and it gets lumpy. Water noticeably cooler in SE. If there is a NW, stay home and watch the cricket. Hope that helps.
