    30lb braid for 3500HD?

    Hi all,

I am about to invest in a Certate 3500HD to use on an upcoming trip to the NT. I am looking to spool up with 30lb braid and use the reel for fishing SP's around the bommies and also for throwing slugs and medium poppers, and I cant decide what braid to use.....ultrathin PE such as castaway or Nitlon will give me a bit more capacity, however using fins or tuffline would be better when working placcies around the reef......which way to swing I dont know!

Also, how much 30lb can you get on a 3500HD? I have heard people say 300m but the reel specs suggest around 200m?

i have a 2500 cutom r certate and i used nearly a full spool of 35lb saltiga Hyper Sensor braid (300m)...nearly 160 bucks a roll if you can find it...luckly i found 3 or 4 and some 50lb stuff at the big place with a snake mascot for 80 a roll...35lb is only a pe 2 so its is like silk and i find its the best line i have ever used.

Just a suggestion........maybe finns 30lb and buy a 1000yrd spool of it so you can re-spool when needed........even 50lb..........I live up here (NT) and really you don't need large line capacity the majority of your fishing will be in 15-30 meter's so 150mtrs would be plenty unless you plan to go really really wide like 100nm............Jewies on sp or goldies whatever will run you around the bomies .........more likely to be GT's though so buying a medium priced decent quality line is the way to go IMO.

Sure the sunline castaway is great but it's more suited to a baitcaster, finns or whiplash is a better option for here even 30lb fireline will handle most of our fish.A $100 spool of line will get destroyed as quick as a $40 spool off of a screaming reel.

I recently bought a Catalina 4500h to replace my old Tss4 clunker and have spooled it up with 50lb finns and got about 200meter's on it it's more than enough.I also use about 3-4 mtrs of 80lb for leader........(schnider it's tough)

Mikooh, I used 30lb Whiplash on my 3500HD. fitted the whole spool on it(300 yards).
It's plenty strong enough for most ooglies and reasonably thin (don't believe the numbers on the box, it aint that thin). Fins is super strong and breaks way above its stated rating....30lb fins breaks above 50lb on test. Tuffline is great stuff and really easy to use. neither are the thinnest lines around but you'll fit enough on for what you want.
    Cheers Roo.

Thanks for the replies guys, especially Dan, as its always good to get some local knowledge!

I think I will go the Finns, as it has been good to me in the past (and is a bit cheaper than tufline ATM) and I already have a big eggbeater loaded with 50lb- I just thought it would be interesting to see what beasties I can extract with a little rod & reel!
