    What pound fireline?

    Hi all,

I've got a Starlo Stix Squidy Spin M (2-4kg) with a Daiwa Exceler 1500... It's my lure flicking rod, but I also use it for bait on occasion.

I've got the main spool lined with 6lb mojiko braid and I am about to purchase line for the spare spool.

I'm considering 2lb fireline for small soft plastics and bait fishing for bream and whiting. I have to assume the occasional flatty too.
Now I know my 6lb braid will handle all of that fine, but is 2lb too light of an option for the spare? Should I go 4lb instead?

    Cheers

    Matt.

It depends on the structure you're fishing, if you're in heavy structure go for the 4lb to land more fish but if you're just on sand etc use 2lb.

I found using lighter Braid on a rod that was rated at a heavier test was a disaster.

For light braids I beleive you neded a light rod or it just feels clumsly.

If you rod is a light 2-4k then 2lb is a bit under that range.

Personally I would go the 4lb first, fish it til it wears out then decide next time if you want to go lighter.

light braid can be a pain in the butt (if your not used to it).

4lb with a 4 or 6lb leader should giver you some stealth but a flattie will bite through it.

    cheers

Yeah especially the 2lb Fireline it's a pain to tie knots with

Cheers I guess the other option is to throw some 8 or 10lb on the spare for tackling jacks and flatties? I have 10lb braid on my Penn Captiva, but it's not like I'm in a hurry to use that reel over my Daiwa.

i love the 2lb crystal for general breaming around maroochy but ya need 6-8lb if you want to land the trevs regularly. the 2lb is quite strong and ya cast a mile, but you do need a smooth drag.

Cheers I might have been... I've been flicking around there because it's close to home, despite a severe lack of me catching anything (a couple of longtom only). I can't remember if I was there friday or not.
If I was I would have been using a blue starlo stix, dark blue hat, small gray backpack with my gear in it and depending on the time of day I may have had a LED miners light on my head.

I figure the 6lb braid should be fine for breaming, I'm just trying to decide between 2-4lb for lighter flicking or put 10lb on it for flatties, cod trevs and jacks. I have some 10lb mojiko superstring here that I could put on it and return the fireline for a refund.... errr I mean in exchange for another lure or two.

Nope, I've only fished there with lures.

Come to think of it Friday I didn't fish until about 7pm and I went straight over to twin waters.

4lb for me .... its plenty thin ..... & will break over 6lb /////// Play around with your leader first as 2lb braid or FC brings its own issues - You do need an appropriate rod & the drag needs to be silky smooth ( & then there are wind knots , countless wind knots) ......... not to mention structure fished.
So look at a rod length of 2 or 3lb FC leader (fly type leader) .... 4lb braid mainline .....

    Re: What pound fireline?

i get a lot more wind knots with the 6lb and 4lb than 2lb fireline. i liked the 3lb but i think the 2lb is better (only when im casting bream hb's and placys with 4-6lb leaders). all the surface work i do is done with 6lb main and nothing less than 12lb leader as the bream still hit it with gusto but its not light enuff to get bitten off by the trevs, queenies and giant herring( the herring still get me, they have nasty teeth). i done like fc to much as main line as nagg said, it can get nasty if you dont have the right gear, i dont so i stick with braid.

    Re: What pound fireline?

Hmm, it's a tough choice, primarily as I already have 6lb (proper) braid on the main spool...

I'm no pro, but I have a calm and collected head on my shoulders. What I lack in experience and skill I more than make up for in natural talent.

I picked up a couple more reels today at stupidly low prices.. Daiwa proshooter 2500 for $15 dowm from $119.99 and a Pflueger Medalist for $50 down from $184.99... I'll have to work out a good combination so I've got a setup for most situations.
